The first Tale of the Underdark!@dresstokilt @Li The number one comment I get when I reference this review tends to be a version of, “…this person has never attended a friend’s funeral, I take it”, followed closely by, “God’s got better things to worry about than a fictional character cussing.” And I just have to laugh.

"Heathcliff is described as a “cruel, hard landlord to his tenants” by villagers in the novel.@cstross @Illuminatus @guyjantic That could be. It's so alien to the way I personally read; I don't have to *like* a protagonist to feel for them. It would be interesting to see the statistics in that area, if one could trust self-reporting.

"Heathcliff is described as a “cruel, hard landlord to his tenants” by villagers in the novel.@Illuminatus That's a really good observation—mistaking the protagonist for a good guy. I've never been able to articulate it, so thank you! @guyjantic

Again: It's not "the first woman/minority to do [thing]", it's "the first woman/minority allowed to work against systemic bias, misogyny, and racism to compete in rigged system and finally get a chance at doing [thing]".I love celebrating achievement! Celebrating achievements is great!
AND (not but, AND) being aware of how much and many were left by the wayside because of the bigotry, bias, and violent greed of the ruling class is incredibly necessary.

Which may seem an unwieldy construction but is very important to keep in mind.
