@mike And just a reminder: Monthly recurring donations add financial stability to your instance - having a reliable stream of income means instance admins can focus on providing service, and not fundraising.

Reddit User Uncovers Who Is Behind Meta’s $2B Lobbying for Invasive Age Verification Tech.@nixCraft So this is Meta’s response to ad blockers and JavaScript blockers and cookie blockers and privacy-centric browsers…
Cut through all the bullshit and get directly to your government-issued identification to extract your demographics (if not your full and real identity)… so they can increase the cost of ads and target you as an individual - not just a profile of interests.

So…. Just a reminder to all the folks working on #MARCHintosh - when tinkering inside your Macs and adding new stuff….@soffronoff Nope, this machine has worked quite well with three IDE devices for 20+ years. I saw the spark and the puff of smoke stank up the house. I haven't removed the IDE devices from the G3 to test them with a USB-IDE adapter, but I'm fairly certain the onboard IDE chip got destroyed... I think 12V got shorted to 5v when a lead from an LED touched the case of the Zip Drive.
Thankfully it still boots off the main drive, but I clearly need to be extra careful.
This is a also cautionary tale about using cheap Amazon crap to do something important. I really should have spent the money on a BlueSCSI and an external case.

Worst case scenario is here…. Plugging anything into the second IDE bus stops the Mac from booting into the finder. It gets about half way, then locks up. I’m hoping I didn’t kill the Zip Drive, since the “click of death” rendered them so rare. It might be time for a BlueSCSI, or maybe it’s time to part this thing out.I’m genuinely shocked that this thing made it to its 29th birthday.

Just a reminder to all the folks working on #MARCHintosh - when tinkering inside your Macs and adding new stuff…. Don’t let random pins on the new equipment touch anything grounded.
I let the magic smoke out of an IDE -> CF adapter… and appear to have killed a 40GB drive… which is the best case scenario…. I hope I haven’t killed the IDE bus on my PowerMac G3.
Thankfully, it was a mostly empty data drive, not my boot disk with all my data.

Finally got this TRS-80 online with #fujinet.@croyle @kd6nfd I attribute my success in my career as an IT consultant to owning a TRS-80 as a teen…. Because there was practically no software for it, and no local user group.
Anything I wanted it to do, I had to write myself. I wrote a (terrible) word processor, learned how to interact with the printer directly, made a (terrible) painting program that used the joystick to move the cursor and change the colour of a square…
My friends all had the C64, and the only thing they ever did with them is play games and pirate software.

So, while clearing out my storage locker, I found a box of MiniDV tapes. So, while clearing out my storage locker, I found a box of MiniDV tapes. I have two cameras, known to be working when they were put in storage about two years ago, but it’s probably time to get the video off the tapes before they deteriorate or the cameras stop working.
What’s the preferred #OpenSource #FOSS #Linux way of downloading copies of the data from tape? I think I have an old Mac Mini with a FireWire port, but I never liked the way iMovie chopped up the clips it downloaded.

Great opportunity for *someone* to write up a pitch for how the fediverse can support communities wanting to move away from discord@maj It would be a shame if someone scanned a face from any one of these sites:
