I managed to get this through it, with the justification "sometimes something's a dumpster fire but you love it anyway"

@stefano Thanks for the Time Machine blog writeup — I think I've fixed it not working on Tahoe, and a clue was in your post: you had Samba 4.19, I had 4.22, and it turns out 4.22 doesn't work with Tahoe+TM without a patch, now applied :) -

I’ll test more later
