  • For the 1,000th time: "AI" does not have agency and cannot think and cannot act.
    crankylinuxuser@infosec.exchangeC crankylinuxuser@infosec.exchange

    @thomasfuchs

    LLMs definitely can act. They can query the internet. They can use tools I teach them (MCP).

    Do they think? I'm not particular sure that many humans even think. Or better yet, many humans respond in rote to the same stimuli (aka parse tokens and respond programmatically).

    Given the recent neuroanatomy of LLMs, their findings are showing how LLMs start to work. What's surprising is that the starting circuits are decoding language, and the exiting circuits reencode language. And there appears to be a universal grammar (thanks Chomsky) internally, shared by many LLM models.

    Pretty sure that older millenials are the last generation to have that sort of privacy.

    I even lost that one with some dumbasses taking pictures of a party we attended, and dumped on Facebook. No choice about it. Found after the fact.

    Purity war like saying " #clanker " is how you get people to go the other way.

    Maybe we should start saying "FRACKING TOASTER" instead?

    But the holier-than-thou purity shit is how you run people away.

    Then again, things are playing out dumber than #NeddLudd 's timeline. At least they understood that owning the machines of production were important, and not "machines bad".

  • It /does not matter/ if you think AI tools are “useful.”
    crankylinuxuser@infosec.exchangeC crankylinuxuser@infosec.exchange

    @splendorr

    Ive used "AI" since 1997.

    That was what is now not considered AI, like Spellcheck.

    Or since I learned cooking when I was 7. Now that was real AI, as an oven. They use PID controllers to control the heat when baking. (They have a training phase, then you take the trained data and execute... Like LLMs).

    Or classifiers. Ive made applications taking neural input and matched trained gestures. Did that in 2015. CPU, and maybe 30MB ram.

    Its all AI until we understand it.

    The real problem isnt modern AI, as in LLMs, RAG, transformers, etc. The problem is that the bulk of the machinery is in the hands of the elite.

    The problem is capitalism. Always has been. Blaming other things is what the billionaires want.

    The clankers can also solve those puzzles too.

    And when a new puzzle is found that works for humans but not clanker soon is retrained so it too can solve.

    I dont have any solutions, other than what would amount to Butlerian Jihad.

  • "You should really try Claude/WhateverLLM before criticizing"
    crankylinuxuser@infosec.exchangeC crankylinuxuser@infosec.exchange

    @whiteshoulders @ploum

    Thats kind of the point.

    Theres intermediate learning software like K-Nearest-Neighbors that also are trained on classified (properly annotated) data, and then can provide percentage responses on trained data. We see this with tools like Merlin birdsong identification.

    I even made a 10 position classifier with the MYO myoelectrical armband back in 2016. No GPU needed. Modest CPU and ram was needed, something that easily a RPi 2 could do.

    Point being is this whole debate is being forced into a binary with folks saying "this is amazing" to "horrific garbage". Maybe LLMs could be made more useful if they output % confidence and citations accurately?

    But again, I'm not going to dismiss, nor am I going to trust everything. Both actions are foolish.

    Better question:

    How many neurons does it take to be "slop"?

    I introduce a 3 neuron example. A PID loop, from control systems theory.

    It has a training phase in which it 'learns' the control from known inputs. And it has a execution phase, of which it applies the learned inputs.

    Even my 3d printers use PID for the nozzle and bed. My oven in the kitchen does so as well.

    Is all learning software "evil"? If no, where's the cutoff?

    Seriously, who's going to actually stop the US from war crimes?

    UN going to bat their tongues around?

    Security Council? Bwaha, US has a veto vote.

    Hague? Hardly.

    Russia has its hands full.
    China doesnt want to fight a remote war.
