    As a result of her - and others' - activism, women were granted limited rights to vote in 1956. She spoke against the Nasser regime in 1957 and was placed under house arrest.

    She stuck to her cover story and was released a few months after her arrest. She then successfully convinced the orphanage to return her baby to her, and went into hiding until liberation.

    She was awarded the Croix de Guerre by France.

    #OnThisDay, 18 Feb 1944, Special Operations Executive courier Mary Herbert was arrested by the Gestapo in Poitiers. The British SOE supported the French resistance.

    The Irish-born Herbert had been operating as a courier - moving messages and equipment around - for over a year. She'd also had a baby whilst in France.

    "I certainly don't want to be one of the boys. I want to offer my peculiar gifts as a black woman... a sensitivity and an awareness that comes out of more than a passing acquaintance with oppression."

    #OnThisDay, 10 Feb 1917, plant pathologist Johanna Westerdijk becomes the first woman appointed as a professor in the Netherlands when she joins Utrecht University.

    Two of her PhD students, Bea Schwarz and then Christine Buisman, identified the fungus causing a disease in elm trees. They were building on Dina Spierenburg's work which had identified it as a new disease.

    Hence it being called Dutch Elm disease.
