Milano, 1 mar. (askanews) - Si chiude un'era per la Repubblica Islamica con la morte dell'Ayatollah Ali Khamenei a 86 anni, l'uomo che per oltre tre decenni ha esercitato un potere pressoché assoluto su religione, politica e apparati militari.
Nato a Mashhad nel 1939 in una famiglia modesta, Khamenei passa gran parte degli anni '60 e '70 in prigione per il suo attivismo contro lo Scià. Fedelissimo di Khomeini, fondatore della Repubblica Islamica, gli succede come Guida Suprema nel 1989.
Sotto la sua guida, e con l'appoggio del Corpo delle Guardie della Rivoluzione - di cui ha ampliato moltissimo il potere - esplode il confronto ideologico con l'Occidente, il grande nemico, in particolare contro Israele e gli Stati Uniti "Grande Satana".
Durante il suo regime, in cui il Paese è sprofondato in una grave crisi economica, ogni tentativo di protesta da parte della popolazione è stato bollato come colpo di Stato e represso nel sangue, dal Movimento Verde del 2009 fino alle manifestazioni per Mahsa Amini nel 2022, dopo la morte della giovane donna in seguito all'arresto per non aver indossato bene il velo da cui nacque il movimento "Donne, Vita, Libertà", fino alle ultime proteste di piazza fra il 2025 e i primi mesi del 2026, nuovamente soffocate con la violenza.

Milan, March 1 (askanews) – An era closes for the Islamic Republic with the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at 86, the man who for over three decades has exercised virtually absolute power over religion, politics and military apparatuses.

Born in Mashhad in 1939 in a modest family, Khamenei spent much of the 1960s and 70s in prison for his activism against the Shah. A loyal follower of Khomeini, founder of the Islamic Republic, he succeeded him as Supreme Leader in 1989.

Under his guidance, and with the support of the Revolutionary Guard Corps – which he greatly expanded – a clash of ideologies erupted with the West, the great enemy, particularly against Israel and the United States “Great Satan.”

During his regime, in which the country plunged into a serious economic crisis, every attempt at protest by the population was branded a coup d'état and suppressed with violence, from the 2009 Green Movement to the demonstrations for Mahsa Amini in 2022, after the death of the young woman following her arrest for improperly wearing the headscarf, which gave birth to the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement, to the latest square protests between 2025 and the early months of 2026, again suffocated with violence.
