@pixelate great, thanks. I'll stop shivering on the side and jump into the pool.

@techsinger @pixelate I've used that one and it works fine. I think there is a more oficial one. I seem to remember @simon querying my choice of that one VS the official one. Answer was it was the first one that came up when I searched for one and I don't use it all that often.

@klittle667 @pixelate I would appreciate @simon letting us know what he thinks the better one is but honestly, I've only got six or so machines (most virtual), so efficiency is good more in theory than in practice.

@pixelate Thanks very much 🙂 Don't know if I agree though. Emacs drove me up the wall and you like that sort of thing. Most admirable, you understand, I'm just lazy.

@techsinger @klittle667 @pixelate The official server was released years after the NVDA remote addon, for reasons I still don't fully understand or agree with. So for a few years, the unofficial server was the only one that existed. At the time, I found that it froze or outright crashed occasionally, and we could never figure out why.
When the official server came out, I immediately switched to it, launched NVRA, and haven't looked back. It's been about five years and I use remote every day without a single crash.
The unofficial server might have gotten more stable now, I do know it has an easier setup process, but I've already got mine working and just haven't found a reason to try it again.

@techsinger @klittle667 @pixelate I have a very rough setup script for Debian here, which I use to get my own servers running. It's short and might help people set it up on other operating systems.

@pixelate @simon @klittle667 So long as it doesn't break, why bother?

@simon @techsinger @klittle667 @pixelate All this jibber jabber is making me want to make an NVDA remote server in Rust or Go that's fully compliant with the latest specs and is as simple as wgetting a binary, running an init command and being in business. I have too many damn projects though.

@TheQuinbox @simon @klittle667 @pixelate I'm sure it could be done and I'm sure you could do it. Having said that, it's work. The other issue is that it's only really vital to people with tons of machines. I have a small bunch and have been using the companion and the direct connection without major issues, particularly now that tailscale is so reliable.
