    @bicmay @inquiline About 12 years ago, at an info session for my child's preschool, the question of measles vaccines came up. "It's not, like, *Ebola*," said the school's director, who was old enough to remember polio and should have known better.

    I approached her privately after the session was over, and politely mentioned that Ebola's total mortality was in the tens of thousands, while measles has killed millions. She bluntly refused to process this information.

      “A number of them clearly said if they had known, they would have vaccinated themselves and their children against measles, but they didn’t realize how bad it was,” Nolen said.

          @thriftwicker @mossyrua

          🤷🏽‍♀️ Social media platforms and their algorithms can put people in bubbles. Some of those Texas families whose kids died from measles didn't want to vaccinate their other kids afterwards.

          Vaccinating your remaining kids, after losing one, would be an admission that your decision to not vaccinate that child was responsible for their death. @bicmay @thriftwicker @mossyrua

                      @mossyrua @bicmay That’s the language they’ll use, because they lack both the personal awareness and self-critical honesty it takes to say “I devalued all the voices telling me that I was wrong and now I’m angry that these same voices weren’t able to convince me because I want it to be someone else’s fault”.

                      The underlying problem remains.

                            @bicmay They don’t understand it because it’s been eradicated for many years. My sister had it. It destroys your immune system so at the same time she got the mumps and chickenpox, and I think it really did terrible things to her mind and body. I remember how bad it was. I was able to be vaccinated before I could get it.

                                    @bicmay A deadly disease that resets your immunity to other diseases is "worse than they expected"? You don't say.

                                      Vaccinating your remaining kids, after losing one, would be an admission that your decision to not vaccinate that child was responsible for their death. @bicmay @thriftwicker @mossyrua

                                        @bicmay We need a vaccine for idiocy.

                                        @bicmay @nomdeb That vaccine used to be education, but apparently willful ignorance became a “right”, rather than a malady over the last 50 years.

                                          @MissConstrue @bicmay I had measles as a kid, and my Mom locked me in the bedroom and turned off all the lights and drew the blinds because she was afraid I would lose my vision. I know I warned EVERYBODY I knew when this epidemic broke out to vaccinate as soon as they could. They just don't listen.

                                          @thepoliticalcat @bicmay I’m in that weird cohort of GenX who didn’t catch measles, but also didn’t get the vaccine because it didn’t exist. By the time it existed, I was old enough that nobody brought it up until I got pregnant in my 30s. (Surprise, infertile one, thou hast sex on a solstice? Baby for you.) You can’t get the vaccine while pregnant, but thankfully her cohort was the “autism is caused by vaccines”, so up to that point, herd immunity kept me safe. While I was still in the hospital after birth, I got vaccinated , and then got shingles vaccine last year, because iirc it’s the same disease vector. (Everyone she grew up with was vaccinated, even my snake handler fundamentalist friends weren’t crazy enough not to vaccinate their kids.)
