A/B'ing can be a challenge as well because you have to gain-match.@glitched01 yep. most of my releases are slightly lower in volume than is the standard in the genre. i gave up on trying to match long ago, i only push to make it comfortably in line with my other releases at this point. i'd rather the dynamics and overall vibe consistent than the alternative.
this probably has turned off some listeners who expect everything cranked but whatever.

@tsrono Same for my personal work. I don't go above -12LUFS, but the material determines the final levels.
I do mastering on the side and I have this piano track that is challenging me. Beefing it up to match the other tracks sounds "good," but the impact is softened (literally).
I think I'm going to go with the more dynamic version, as the target media is cassette tape.
