This is where the people that donated to the Southern Poverty Law Center went to donate, so that their money could be used to infiltrate and uncover white nationalist organizations.

So don't donate here unless you want some of your money to be used to uncover white nationalist organizations.

@mekkaokereke link is broken. I went to their homepage and it’s the same donate link as there. I am hoping that your Post crashed their donation server and it will be back up soon.🤞

@monkeyninja @mekkaokereke As a 501-c3 they might not be able to accept anonymized contributions, though.

@mekkaokereke I have donated to them before, knowing full well about their use of informants to infiltrate the Klan. That is the work I wanted to support. I gave them more money after this stupid indictment.

They send out mailers to people who donate. They made that a cover story and then wrote about it. They called Hawaii's indigenous water protectors a "hate group". 14 years I lived in Hawaii. I never met a hateful Hawaiian person. I complained & stopped donating. I probably wasn't the only person who did so. So maybe they've stopped advertising and bragging about targeting indigenous people? I hope so.

@mekkaokereke Man it would be a pity if people used services like Cloaked or IronVest for payments as they obfuscate the payer data, use zero logging, and are outside five-eyes territory. Then you could donate to such organizations fairly anonymously. It would just be such a shame if people knew about that.

I use my credit unions "bill pay" feature. It lets me schedule payments, avoids credit card companies' take, and i can see at one glance who im giving money to.

I switched to this a few yrsr5s back after a spate of CC fraud where i had a new CC number every few months.

It confuses some orgs thet use CCs ro maintain "membership" (make you feel like you're part, benefits etc) but i just want them to have my money i dont need the frou frou.

In the same vein, thanks for banning all the books worth reading.

It's a good thing that young people never break the rules or push any boundaries. I'm sure those bans keeping books out of libraries will keep the kids from ever reading them at all rather than, say, scoring one bootleg copy and passing it around the whole middle school.

SPLC has been doing heroic and effective work curbing and exposing racists and white nationalists for years. that high level of effectiveness is exactly why they are being targeted by the current administration...

i hope everyone who can donates to them.

We shouldn't trust anything from the current Justice Dept. That said, my understanding is that #SPLC is an organisation more interested in enriching itself than in fighting racism. E.g., from the #NewYorker:

"In 1995, the Montgomery Advertiser had been a Pulitzer finalist for a series that documented, among other things, staffers’ allegations of racial discrimination within the organization."

Is there evidence that gov't is harassing individual donors?

Is that enough to stop you?

Why comply in advance? It won't save you.

@tomjennings @raven667 There’s a world of difference between “complying in advance” and “I’m part of a group with targets on their backs and keeping a low profile is what allows me to not have daily panic attacks.”

"In Harper’s, Ken Silverstein had revealed that the center had accumulated an endowment topping [$120M] while paying lavish salaries to its highest-ranking staffers and spending far less than most nonprofit groups on the work that it claimed to do. The great Southern journalist John Egerton, writing for The Progressive, had painted a damning portrait of [...] civil-rights work mainly as a marketing tool for bilking gullible Northern liberals."

The Reckoning of Morris Dees and the Southern Poverty Law Center

Bob Moser writes on the Southern Poverty Law Center firing its co-founder and longtime mastermind Morris Dees, after years of allegations of sexual harassment and racial discrimination against him.

a hatchet job by the NYT is more endorsement than condemnation in my mind...

they've been a fascist publicity firm in their op-eds and choice/wording of headlines longer than i've been alive.

There are lots of reasons to criticise the *NY Times*, I agree. But this exposé is from the *New Yorker*, and I've seen similar articles from other serious magazines.

                                        Here's a good one from a left-leaning website: https://www.currentaffairs.org/news/2019/03/the-southern-poverty-law-center-is-everything-thats-wrong-with-liberalism

they may not be perfect but they do some very effective work.

i'm more concerned with the precedent. using the DoJ to be the department of right wing revenge, along with the possibility of the IRS yanking non-profit status from anyone called a "terrorist" if they critize the government are truly existential threats to free speech and free society.

let's kill that first, then worry about cleaning up non-profits.
