Am I the only one who feels like #Artemis2 is something I might be celebrating in other times but find myself aggressively indifferent — if not hostile — to?

@tantramar Yeah. I'm at "okay, that's cool, but who will really care where various countries dropped flags to stake mineral claims if civilization collapses under the stresses of climate change and we can't even get there? Are there not more pressing problems we should be working on first?"
-
@CatherineBabault Even the science angle is a hard sell. We did more in the 1960s than Artemis II is doing today. Bleh.
@tantramar That money could be spent elsewhere to save the planet and its inhabitants.

@madgeface Canadians are also being pushed to feel patriotic about it since there’s a Canadian on the crew. Frankly, I’m slightly embarrassed about it.
@tantramar @madgeface In my experience whenever a Canadian gets *pushed* to feel patriotic, they tend to tell the pusher to go fuck themselves. Pushed patriotism is a slippery path to nationalism, and as a culture, we're pretty resistant to nationalism.

@CatherineBabault It could, but I would point to so-called “defense” budgets first. They’re much, much larger and are rarely used to defend anything important.

@alan @tantramar By this measure, I, too, am Canadian.
(I did have 2 Canadian great grandmothers on my dad's side and grew up in Vermont, so sorta close-ish)

@madgeface @alan Have you heard of this? You may qualify. This is a Government of Canada web page. https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/news/2025/06/the-government-of-canada-introduces-citizenship-by-descent-legislation-for-canadian.html

@tantramar @alan I have heard of that and have thought of applying. The hitch is that my husband has health issues and won't even consider moving to Vermont because it's too cold. He was also born in Vietnam and grew up in New Jersey and he just can't handle winters any longer than what we get here.

@madgeface @alan Yeah; New Jersey winters are no easier than winters here. Just shorter. Which is a kind of easier, I guess. But cold is cold.

@tantramar @alan Well had a small taste of "real" winter this year with 2 weeks of below freezing temperatures. Husband was so cold - I got him a heated electric vest with an extra battery for Christmas and he wore it constantly. Meanwhile,y hormones are still off so I was hanging out in a tank top with the ceiling fan on (low, but on).

@madgeface @alan Oh, that sounds like zero fun! This winter was relatively mild but refuses to end. I need sun. Stat!

@tantramar @alan I have to use a SAD lamp, even here in northern VA. And spring is on the way, I promise: my daffodils are just starting to get crispy.

@madgeface @alan I could always move to southwestern BC where they’ve effectively banished winter. And yet…

@tantramar @alan Isn't it expensive there? I fantasize about that also, TBH.

@madgeface @alan That was the “and yet…” part.

@madgeface @tantramar Our daffodils are hardy, the shoots are up about 3" already. But it's a relative holiday for them, last year they weathered an ice storm.
