I keep seeing articles like this, about how people choosing to drink less is hurting bars and restaurants, and it's almost always framed as people, especially younger generations, don't like to drink.

They never seem to bring up the fact that a cocktail is like $20 now unless you go to a really divey dive bar. It's the same kind of reporting they on how no one goes to the movies anymore. It's always about changing habits, and never that movie tickets just cost a lot now.
@MLE_online Also: articles bleating that corner stores – gosh, mom and pop themselves! – are being hurt by increased taxes and restrictions on tobacco and nicotine products.

@MLE_online They do mention the increase in price, but it's towards the end of the article:
"Dustin Lancaster operates or is a partner in a dozen restaurants and bars in Los Angeles. He thinks that when trying to figure out Gen Z’s habits, many operators forget to consider cost. When Mr. Lancaster would go out after work in his early 20s, a whiskey and a beer were seven or eight bucks. Now, it could be pushing $20."

@MLE_online also maybe it's a good thing that people don't constantly poison themselves with a substance that's more dangerous than many "hard" drugs? I'm so sorry that your business that relevantly involves *checks notes* serving toxic drinks to almost all customers is not that profitable anymore.

There's a burrito place near me that I really like, that I've been eating at for years. I used to go once a week or so, but since the pandemic, the price of a burrito went from $5 to $11, and that's just too much! I eat there once every few months now. It doesn't mean I don't like burritos though.
@MLE_online
Is Naugles still a thing in Southern California? -

i put a graphene os on a old pixel phone. had linux installed on 2 chromebooks....@DonChacale it is. There's not really a good alternative to google maps, for example, and even though i use duckduckgo for my searching, it fails enough that i still have to use google for some searching. And my community college uses gmail for student email accounts. Google has its fingers in a lot of things

@ljrk No, I like drinking lol.

Is Naugles still a thing in Southern California?@TTFKA_Tay0 I don't think so, I believe I've heard of that as like an old timey del taco competitor, but I've never seen one

By the time they're done paying for their food, not many have money left for drinks. -

Now I know why you associated them with Del Taco. They're gone but sort of revived. -

@MLE_online Reminds me of a headline from The Onion awhile back. Something like: Local bar supports the sober community by offering $16 mocktails.
-
@ljrk No, I like drinking lol.
@MLE_online Yes, and it ruins people's lives. I'm not advocating for a ban, but pretending less people drinking is something inherently bad is very much outside of the "responsibly dealing with drugs" category.
-
There are limits, and if I can buy two bottles of vodka from the grocery store for the price of a single cocktail, I'm going to opt to not have that cocktail most of the time
@MLE_online Same. I don't think one old-fashioned should cost more than a bottle of bourbon.
