This story of a young wheelchair user being thrown out of Manchester's Club Tropicana because her wheelchair was a safety risk (???) suggests we haven't come nearly as far as the self-satisfied political class think we have on disable rights...

If I was loving in Manchester (and in all fairness still clubbing) I'd be arranging a boycott of Club Tropicana.

This really is extraordinary in this day & age!

@ChrisMayLA6 the circumstances of this incident strongly suggest that club would struggle to safely evacuate should an major security incident occur and everyone (disabled or not) would be at risk, so the venue should have a full licence review and be closed down if found not to be complying with both accessibility and safety requirements..

@ChrisMayLA6 Call the licensee in to discuss the club premises licence. Tomorrow. That will cut through bullshit very quickly.

@3dcandy @ChrisMayLA6 this is very sad. All the advancements on integration go very slowly, and then suddenly go back with much more speed. It's infuriating.

I'm speaking as Autistic, but I reckon it happens to most disabilities in a very similar way.

@ChrisMayLA6 as a disabled person, no, it's sadly not that extraordinary. We're treated as second class citizens the moment we show any disability.

I collect examples of discrim so people can compare situations and learn strategies.

I am impressed 1) this young woman hasn't had previous refusals and 2) that she had the idea of showing the Equality Act on her phone - that's brave to do while being hassled.

@ChrisMayLA6 As a wheelchair user who goes clubbing I always have to confirm with a place online or over the phone with evidence that there is accessibility.

@ChrisMayLA6 Taking them to small claims court is usually more effective AND more lucrative, and you can represent yourself. 🙂 Just in case you ever get subjected to this kind of discrimination yourself or know someone else who does: https://www.kingqueen.org.uk/dart-text-version/
