“The US is no longer a democracy. One of the most credible global sources on the health of democratic nations now says this outright. The Varieties of Democracy Institute at Gothenburg University reaches the alarming conclusio … that the US is hurtling towards autocracy at a faster rate than Hungary and Turkey.” 1/

‘The…“liberal democracy index” shows that the speed with which US democracy is being dismantled is unprecedented in modern history. [M]ain factor is a “rapid and aggressive concentration of powers in the presidency”, Lindberg says. Congress has been marginalised, jeopardising the “checks and balances” … so crucial to US democracy. [C]ivil rights have been rapidly declining and freedom of expression is now at its lowest level since the 1940s.’ 4/4

77 million voted for this. 80 million let it happen by non-voting.

                        more or less they knew.

there are those excuses: "i didn't vote for this." "i didn't know this to happen." certain point those are not acceptable.

if enough of us wrote/emailed/phoned/screamed outside their office to our congressional

@heidilifeldman No, the US has always been more accurately described as a constitutional republic (if anything, maybe you can call it an indirect democracy, but definitely not a pure form of one). I believe this article best sums things up: https://www.standrewslawreview.com/post/is-the-united-states-a-constitutional-republic

Democrats were so concerned with decorum that they let a traitor get away with treason / sedition and then he got elected President.

They deserve to accept some responsibility for where we are right now.

@pinoycelt @heidilifeldman “The US falls under governmental classifications for both Indirect Democracy and Constitutional Republic”

This article sums nothing up, unless your point is that it is both a republic and a democracy. If that’s your point, I don’t see the relevance to the topic.

The issue at hand is that the USA has historically been a representative democracy, and the current trajectory will see it losing that status soon.

That would be, with slight exceptions, Republicans in Congress.

The USA has always been a low quality democracy, or even no democracy at all. But it was hidden. Not anymore.
