@mullvadnet How on earth is this even enforceable?

@alexanderdyas @mullvadnet It isn't, and I assume it's the point. Make the law vague enough that anyone can be prosecuted under it.

The UK has announced plans to fast-track legislation requiring “age verification for VPN use”. The correct term, however, is not age verification but identity verification.

A law like this would require everyone to identify themselves in order to use a VPN. This would pose a risk to whistleblowers, violate human rights, and represent yet another step toward an authoritarian society.

@mullvadnet So often, systems like government, sports clubs, businesses have such unscalable paths to the influencing of decision makers that they learn very fast that they can be authoritative and selfish with precious little interference.

@mullvadnet curious timing. just about an hour ago I forged and verified my first zero knowledge proof that can tell the verifier that proof holder was born before a certain timestamp (aka. older than N years) at the same time reveling absolutely (!) nothing about proof holders, not even those who authorize it.

This is exactly my point as well. The EU has done some great things in digital privacy laws and yet they still want to do dumb shit. I am appaled with the issues with CSAM and I agree something needs to be done. I also agree with the deplorable ways in which social media has infected society - howver, the answer is not to destroy privacy.

Requiring every VPN user to verify their age to stop a few bad actors is like requiring everyone to show government ID to buy a hammer because a few people used hammers to commit crimes.

phase 2 is requiring everyone to use an approved vpn aka government "gateway".

because right now, you can access the internet via all kinds of entry pints - from your broadband at home, to your 4G mobile, to the cafe wifi, etc and it makes it a little less convenient to surveil you.

much easier if all your traffic goes through the approved ID-verifying gateway.

How that would be enforced with VPN suppliers in other countries will be interesting to see.

I suspect some of them will tell the UK.GOV to fuck off, which is the correct response.

@hypolite @mullvadnet There should be a civil service IT sanity department. It is politically neutral, staffed by people who actually have a clue. Proposals like this are submitted to this department and a simple response is returned, one of:

@alexanderdyas @hypolite @mullvadnet I like that idea. 👍 It feels like politicians (and those that advise them) always pursue the worst technical solution to a problem. The "problem" of end-to-end encryption is another area where there's no shortage of political ideas that would cause more problems than they'd solve.

@mullvadnet Well this was unfortunately absolutely foreseeable after their previous law about age restriction and the following VPN usage surge... Doesn't make this any less bad, however.

@mullvadnet Reminder this is only a consultation but I deeply worry about passing any of this by using secondary legislation. I call on everyone in the UK to get involved in the consultation when it starts and tell them why this is a bad idea and support groups pushing back on this.

Age verification for VPN doesn't make sense. Why shouldn't children use VPNs?

The UK has announced plans to fast-track legislation requiring “age verification for VPN use”. The correct term, however, is not age verification but identity verification.

@mullvadnet it amazes me the lengths parents will go to, to avoid parenting and require others to do it for them.

How can the people in U.K escape being victims of such a policy that's slowly taking away their freedom?
