    Looking for scientific resources. My wife got suckered into "trans people are severely mentally ill and should be pitied and treated" talking points and I would appreciate help finding resources that show that pathologizing is both incorrect and harmful. Retoots appreciated.

    @nowwhat I don’t have scientific research to offer, but consider that being left-handed was once viewed similarly. Variation between individuals is seen in all populations.

        @nowwhat I don't have bandwidth to locate specific resources, but you should get some good leads searching "rebuttal of UK Cass review" and following the citations. Best of luck.

          @nowwhat

          It is no longer a mental illness. Under ICD11 Gender Dysphoria has been removed and therefore no longer exists as an illness. It has been replaced with Gender Incongruence as a place holder for other physological conditions which may be co-morbid or present atypically in trans people.

          Gender dysphoria exists, but it is a symptom of the way we are treated by society.

            @nowwhat I’ve found in general that people who are against trans people’s rights generally need more experience with trans people in their real life. The arguments aren’t logical when placed against the fact that trans people exist and are people instead of these scary/pitiable things that are over there.

            @LadyJessica That's the trick, though: she's not denying that the world is unfair to trans folks. She's just focused on the pathologism and pity.

              @nowwhat This may or may not be helpful, but the ICD is the international standard for basically defining medical conditions, and lays out the basics of what doctors need to understand about trans people.

              It's a cold, objective summary of the topic that's much more useful than the DSM because it considers expertise from all of medicine - not just psychiatry.

              @orange Now this is exactly what I'm looking for, Thank You!

              > This reflects current knowledge that trans-related and gender diverse identities are not conditions of mental ill-health, and that classifying them as such can cause enormous stigma.

                @alexadeswift Thank you. The ICD11 might be exactly what I'm after. It is exactly as unequivocal as I was hoping:

                    @autisticplushy

                    Unfortunately I was getting ready to go grocery shopping, and also we now have major psyhciactric organisations shifting to a gender critical POV, including platforming exclusively TERFs on panels discussing trans healthcare.

                    So nowadays I go to the top, and then drill down.

                      @alexadeswift @autisticplushy Oh, I think they were referring to my wife when they were talking about people who'd only listen to diagnostic guidelines, not you.

                      Self determination and informed consent are all that ought to matter. But for those like my wife... Appeal to Authority might do the trick.

                        @nowwhat

                        In my experience they often deride the WHO and prefer the pseudoscience of SEGM et al. Unfortunately those groups are now infesting formerly reputable organisations.
