    Looking for scientific resources. My wife got suckered into "trans people are severely mentally ill and should be pitied and treated" talking points and I would appreciate help finding resources that show that pathologizing is both incorrect and harmful. Retoots appreciated.

    @nowwhat
    If she means that society's pressure, institutional discrimination and objective hardship when transitioning can cause issues for many trans people, she might be right. If what she's saying is that we are trans because we're mentally ill, I will not bother engaged in it the same way I wont engaged in a argument with someone claiming blacks are mentally ill.

      @nowwhat why... just why
      this is a "you are beating a dead horse",
      you could go with, it's no longer considered a mental illness on sources and that is just spreading hate for free. "Why would you have the same opinion on any topic as Donald Trump"

      btw, i would tag cw this as "transphobia, help needed, hate speech"

      @autisticplushy Thank you, I've CWed it.

      The rhetorical appeal to emotion likely won't play as she's being serious and rational about it, unfortunately.

        @nowwhat I was thinking into showing her criticisms about antipsychiatry, it's one of the pilars of this shit.

        people use "rationality" and intelectuality to deny the validity of equally rational arguments and that is the basis of any supremacist school of thought 😞

            @nowwhat let’s see…

            The well documented and medically proven treatment for gender dysphoria is transition. So if she wants to pity and treat us, that is how it’s done.

            You could go the harm reduction route, where the harm of a trans person living their life is much less than the harm applied to trans people who are refused transition.

            You could go the “the laws that target trans people also effect cis people” which might be helpful.

              @nowwhat @autisticplushy are you sure she is being rational? Or rationalizing?

              I would look at what sources her talking points refer to, how they are rated by other scientists, and where they get their funding.

              Being rational, statistically, delaying the onset of puberty can save so many people's lives. Vs. Having a preconceived notion that trans people are wrong and therefore being convinced by anti-trans disinformation. See https://commonslibrary.org/the-anti-trans-movement/

                @nowwhat I’ve found in general that people who are against trans people’s rights generally need more experience with trans people in their real life. The arguments aren’t logical when placed against the fact that trans people exist and are people instead of these scary/pitiable things that are over there.

                  @nowwhat This may or may not be helpful, but the ICD is the international standard for basically defining medical conditions, and lays out the basics of what doctors need to understand about trans people.

                  It's a cold, objective summary of the topic that's much more useful than the DSM because it considers expertise from all of medicine - not just psychiatry.

                      @nowwhat @finn what I gleaned from the few minutes of it before posting, it looked to be talking about people wanting to control other people down to their core identity including sexuality and also mentioned the cruelty of conversion therapy which is basically what they consider “treatment” for lgbtq. That’s all I know about it.

                        @nowwhat I don’t have scientific research to offer, but consider that being left-handed was once viewed similarly. Variation between individuals is seen in all populations.

                            @nowwhat I don't have bandwidth to locate specific resources, but you should get some good leads searching "rebuttal of UK Cass review" and following the citations. Best of luck.

                              It is no longer a mental illness. Under ICD11 Gender Dysphoria has been removed and therefore no longer exists as an illness. It has been replaced with Gender Incongruence as a place holder for other physological conditions which may be co-morbid or present atypically in trans people.

                              Gender dysphoria exists, but it is a symptom of the way we are treated by society.

                                @LadyJessica That's the trick, though: she's not denying that the world is unfair to trans folks. She's just focused on the pathologism and pity.

                                      Looking for scientific resources. My wife got suckered into "trans people are severely mentally ill and should be pitied and treated" talking points and I would appreciate help finding resources that show that pathologizing is both incorrect and harmful. Retoots appreciated.

                                        @autisticplushy

                                        Unfortunately I was getting ready to go grocery shopping, and also we now have major psyhciactric organisations shifting to a gender critical POV, including platforming exclusively TERFs on panels discussing trans healthcare.

                                        So nowadays I go to the top, and then drill down.

                                          @alexadeswift @autisticplushy Oh, I think they were referring to my wife when they were talking about people who'd only listen to diagnostic guidelines, not you.

                                          Self determination and informed consent are all that ought to matter. But for those like my wife... Appeal to Authority might do the trick.
