@xabean turns out the US isn’t great for people trying to retire before retirement age, in terms of healthcare. So I went and got a job.

At some point, I should probably accept that I am the problem. Not everything can be a dumpster fire

@jerry Jerry, I don't think you are the problem. It feels like the whole world is on fire.

@jerry real question though - did you look on the healhcare.gov marketplace?

@jerry From what I have seen of you parasocially over the last - JFC, is it really three years? - three years, you are most probably not the concern. The environment has become generally chaotic.

@xabean oh yes. It was bananas. $2500/month here for a plan that doesn’t really pay for anything that isn’t catastrophic. I actually found a private UHC plan that was about $900/month that we ended up signing up for, but it has a super high deductible and also pays for nothing until you hit catastrophic levels, and then when it renews, anything that happened previously is considered a preexisting condition and not covered (if they will even offer the plan to you). And we’re getting old and probably going to actually start using healthcare so trying to stay ahead of it. Plus the company asked nicely for me to join. So there’s that.

@jerry this really makes you wonder about people significantly older and less fortunate than us, doesn't it. 😞

@jerry parent supports -> child; child becomes parent -> child supports parent; the cycle doesn't stop does it? Carrying forward debts can't be good.

@jerry @xabean same here. Health insurance is by far our highest fixed expense - the ACA market is godawful expensive, and I looked at private plans but they all have some poison pill like the pre-existing condition issue you mention. We're fortunate in having no dependents, so we retired early anyway, but it's absolutely batshit.

Not in the U.S. but I feel you. Recently retired and took out insurance cover (not so much for in depth health care as we are in Canada, but mainly for travel cover and some dental, optical benefits). The cost was something of a surprise but probably way less than it would cost if I lived in your neck of the woods.

@jerry new hypothesis, we are inside a giant dumpster but are unable to recognize it as dumpster shaped because we are too small. It is also on fire in some places.
