        @sgharms

        If you buy non-DRM books from an online bookstore that uses ePUB format, you can read it on your Kindle but Amazon won't have control over it. I believe both Kobo and Google Play Books use that format, and there are likely many others.

        You can also buy direct from authors, and many (like myself) sometimes give away free copies.

        The key is knowing how to sideload books on your Kindle. I use BookFunnel to help my readers load books on their preferred device.

          @sgharms Can't see any replies to this on my server - apologies I'm repeating other people.
          The easiest way is to buy them from authors, publishers and retailers who don't use DRM. Lots of authors who post on the Fediverse sell their own books, I think Tor Publishing are DRM free, and itch.io sells books that don't have DRM.
          Depending on the age of your Kindle, you might be able to jailbreak it and put a more open reader on, but that requires some tech confidence.

            @sgharms don't buy books from Amazon. Their DRM is hard to remove. You can buy books from Kobo or other retailers like ebooks.com. Some don't use DRM but Adobe DRM can be removed. Once you have an epub book without DRM you can put it on any eReader with calibre.

            How to setup Calibre to remove DRM from ebooks on Linux

            I'm writing this little guide as a note to myself on how to setup Calibre to make backup copies of the ebooks I purchase on my Linux system.
