The sweeping manifesto is about safeguarding humanity in an era of increasing reliance on #ArtificialIntelligence. #PopeLeo raised the trans-Atlantic slave trade in relation to what he called the new forms of #slavery & #colonialism that the digital revolution is fueling, such as the #unregulated #labor practices in procuring rare #minerals needed for #AI #chips.

Anthea Butler, senior fellow at the Koch History Center, Oxford University, said #PopeLeo needed to acknowledge & atone for the Catholic Church’s complicity in historic #slavery if he wanted to credibly “speak to the current issues of technological enslavement.”

“For descendants of enslaved persons, this is once again a much needed apology from the pope,” said Butler….

Black US Catholics, activists & scholars have long called for the Holy See to atone for its role in the colonial-era trade in human beings, beyond more generic apologies for the involvement of individual Christians.

“It is impossible not to feel deep sorrow when contemplating the immense suffering & humiliation endured by so many in stark contrast to their immeasurable dignity as persons infinitely loved by the Lord. For this, in the name of the church, I sincerely ask for pardon,”Leo wrote.

@Nonilex I really don't understand this topic. I don't say his atonement could be or not important in general, but what has this to do with his words?
Is important to talk about that in response of what he said?
Let's say Newton was an awful man that made horrible things, would I say he shouldn't talk about Newton's law?
If his words were wrong, I'd replay to his words
(His words are important even if wrong as some of million Catholics could follow them)
        PS I'm not catholic

Past popes have apologized for Christians’ involvement in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. But no pope had ever publicly acknowledged, much less apologized for, the role that past popes played in giving European sovereigns explicit authority to subjugate & enslave “infidels.”

@Nonilex Better late than never…but some Roman Catholics will not welcome this at all, one suspects.

As popes go, this one seems to be very decent.

The billionaires will have him killed, I expect.

This Pope is so "woke" that #MAGA believes they know more about the Catholic religion even though most MAGA people have never read their whole Bible.

Maybe it's time to do your research into the candidates before voting in the November 2026 #USA general election. Please vote for the #Democratic candidate.

@Nonilex good step. But now we need church recognizing a msitake that still have huge consequences on our present. Others animals. Slaving and murdering others animals while vegetal options are avaiable should be a terrible sin under christianism logic. How being cruel and abusing power over animals that feel pain and have councioness can still be accepted?
