@jeffowski How about this: Let's not use ableism to fight against transphobia. Opposing one bigotry does not excuse perpetrating another.
Yes, the first reply means to call trans people mentally ill: both bigotries in one. But the joke of the second reply turns on disparaging mentally ill folks.
-
@jeffowski As funny as it sounds when reading it first (I have to admit I smiled): I am mentally ill and I refuse to be put in the same bin as transphobes.
-
TERFs are more obsessed with my existence than I am, and I am trans!

@erinaceus @jeffowski So am I. So are literally a quarter of people on the planet at some point in their lives. But it's ok. They're saying that conservatives are mentally ill, not that all mentally ill people are conservatives. And I'm perfectly prepared to accept that conservatism is some kind of psychosis, because it sure as shit isn't rational.

I have two problems with this joke (although I have to admit I like this bait-and-switch humor). First: It implies that mentally ill people are transphobes. This is not the case. Second: It implies that transphobes are just transphobes because they are ill. I don't want to give them that excuse. They are not (necessarily) ill. They are just assholes.
-
@jeffowski Not for nothing... If trans WERE a mental illness, it's fucking deplorable to treat the mentally ill as poorly as conservatives do.
-
@whybird @jeffowski Oh, I certainly think it was meant as a fast-takedown of a conservative commenter. I do not question the intention, I question the means.
