I have two problems with this joke (although I have to admit I like this bait-and-switch humor). First: It implies that mentally ill people are transphobes. This is not the case. Second: It implies that transphobes are just transphobes because they are ill. I don't want to give them that excuse. They are not (necessarily) ill. They are just assholes.

So are literally a quarter of people on the planet at some point in their lives. But it's ok. They're saying that conservatives are mentally ill, not that all mentally ill people are conservatives.
