Feeling good about the results of my no-mow May, which I am now going to extend indefinitely for about 1/3 of the area of our backyard.

@SallyStrange my lawnmover just won't start, I couldn't get the sparkplug off to clean it. I guess that counts as 'no-mo'.
Now the neighbour lent me an electric one... here I go.

@SallyStrange did you know that I get those micro-toads later in the year. There is a 'season of toads' where I live. It's ecologically a very interesting area.
The soil is a silt-loam, and the land is flat, extending away from Lake Simcoe in Ontario.
It's seasonally wetland, not quite submerged but, high water table.
So we get those micro-toads, and then are everywhere. So many worms that it's weird sometimes, and strangely a lot of ants seem to be here too.
I guess they aerate the soil.

@SallyStrange I had some nice pictures from today too! This is all from today, in a very close proximity actually. That hardly seems real but, it is. If I could convince people to stop the government from destroying the entire area by building the 'Bradford-Bypass' I would. Seems like nobody in Ontario cares about this silt-loam.
Later in the season it gets micro toads everywhere, at some time soon maybe fireflies... more than anywhere I have ever seen(thick).

Are you finding any interesting plants and tree seedlings are found there? That's what I am seeing, and then you start thinking 'shouldn't I be transplanting out this valuable thing?'
And, of course, animals like it too.

@GinevraCat oh my goodness! I wonder if we have different types of toads. For me the sound of spring is the peepers. The teeny tiny tree frogs who live in the wetlands around here. I've heard toads croak but they never seemed terribly loud to me.

@dckim yard is pretty small so unfamiliar trees, not so much, but I'm getting so many pretty wildflowers and bees, it's great. Plus, I think I have an oak seedling that started.

@GinevraCat similar, but our peepers have more of an "eeee" sound when they call, maybe a little higher pitched too? Hyla crucifer is the species.

@SallyStrange I need to go frogging again! I miss finding the little guys. I'm going to look up that species now.
