I forget, what is it called when you claim to be negotiating and then suddenly attack the other side while at the conference table.
Perfidy, it's called Perfidy.
Perfidy (Military/Diplomatic): In international law, this is the specific term for acting in bad faith, such as using a flag of truce or diplomatic negotiations to lure an opponent into a trap before attacking.
Bad Faith Negotiator: A term for someone who never intends to reach a fair agreement, but uses the negotiation process to delay or catch the other side off guard.
Betrayal/Treachery: General terms for the violation of trust involved when one party suddenly attacks after claiming to negotiate.
In contemporary diplomacy, this has been described as "abusing diplomacy to cover up a military operation"

@BuckRogers1965 fun fact: My Canadian province, "British Columbia" came into existence about five years after the British invited six chiefs to a "peace conference" under a flag of truce and then had them lynched.

@Geoffberner I haven't learned about this atrocity yet. Do you know where I could read more about it?

@BuckRogers1965 There were accusations of perfidy during the blockade of Venezuela as well.
U.S. plane used in boat strike was disguised as civilian aircraft, contrary to Pentagon regulation | CBC News
The plane used by the U.S. military to strike a boat accused of smuggling drugs off the coast of Venezuela last fall was painted to look like a civilian aircraft, a move that appears to be at odds with the Pentagon's manual on the laws of war.

During adulthood I lived in BC for a few years. I read the paper regularly but never learned of this.
Is this something that is taught in BC schools, even with a colonial slant?

TBH I have no idea. The history of colonialism in Canada is as atrocious as anywhere and this is just one of innumerable examples that took place from sea to sea to sea.
