I recently have friends that would not leave Meta suddenly emailing me and or texting me because they were/are banned or suspended and are amazed they can get ahold of me very easily even though I am not on a walled garden.

@WeirdWriter I'm in a similar situation, well, without a website or FB account, but similar, and agree wholeheartedly.
But there's a detail that I'm beginning to see here (in Spain) that's making SMS less "universal": Many people is now on plans without free SMSs, and at the same time, the big orgs, headed by google, are rolling out their RCS thing which is advertised as "free and better and very open" but in fact is closed.

@WeirdWriter @martin@social.mdochs.de Yeah, that, we're talking about the same thing.
And yeah, it's ridiculous how thrilling can be that someone contacts you with just a good old sms, postcard, phone call, email or buzzing at the doorphone!

@martin @WeirdWriter @jandi so, the thing about RCS is that there's one (1) application that works with it, available only on one (1) type of phones.
Also I heard of a case where even if you do have that type of phone (android) and that application (Google Messages, say hello to Gemini), a phone company here managed to make it so that RCS works only with people who have phone number with the same company. You will not be able to message using RCS someone using another phone company. -

I took a look recently at the troubles of implementing it in this epic issue with a $14999 bounty: https://github.com/microg/GmsCore/issues/2994
But let's not hijack this thread. Suffice to say that Robert's point still stands.

@WeirdWriter I've had the same cell phone number for as long as I've had a phone. I also use signal, and email. I have briar, xmpp too... most people I know use either signal or email to reach me but there's only a few that try to reach me at all these days...

@viq@hackerspace.pl
I also still prefer #xmpp. I would not want to host matrix, but xmpp is very lightweight and also faster.
