Congrats to the team on this story!

This is all quite troubling yet sadly not surprising. Reminds me of something that UK finance YouTuber dude said about how the old order is dead, everyone knows it, the only question is what comes next and there's two main ideas, banding together and working out how to tax extreme wealth appropriately or else straight up right-wing populism/moving into fascism. And of course the extremely wealthy don't want to be taxed so they throw maximal support behind any right-wing populist movement they can find and hope for the best. Simple as that.

And here's a quote from the article:

"Australia’s richest woman, Gina Rinehart, has become a high-profile friend and supporter of Pauline Hanson."

@phocks Garry's economics? (UK YouTuber) . We'll see if the polls are correct soon in the Farrer By-election. I doubt ON will beat Lib/Nat combined, Sky News sure thinks they will.

This is the "UK finance YouTuber dude" I was talking about! Great article.

        ---

Holding the politician's feet to the fire, forcing this country to do something about inequality so that your kids and grandkids will have a fair go at having a family and buying a house.

The frustration I get is, whenever I talk to politicians, they always say, 'Listen, that's too difficult, we're not ready for it, we don't have the tax policy in place, we're worried about the next budget.'

And every year the same thing happens. The economy gets worse, living standards fall, house prices go up, housing gets less affordable.

And here he is in this interview repeating the same quote. Really great chat. Pretty much the only "economist" I've heard who actually makes sense when talking about this stuff.

Interesting to hear him talking about "building your way out of the housing crisis" like what all the politicians are saying and how it absolutely will never work.

@phocks I ran into this solution the ancient Greeks used, reading up on Aristotle. Metic: the idea of tying citizenship to land ownership. This meant Aristotle had to rent property. <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metic>

This full segment is worth a watch too.

                ---

You need to have politicians who are willing to prepare in the long term to fix serious problems. Nobody is dealing with this growing inequality. They're not even starting to deal with how do we design the tax.

I notice myself and others responding to these ideas with "when will the govt do something about this?"

And we know the govt won't do anything. They have no interest in changing the current power structures. So then we ask, when will the media turn on the govt to demand better? And of course that will never happen because the billionaires own the media and that is entirely the point.

So long as you have creeps like David Koch running morning television we cannot expect the media to hold a candle to reality.

But the internet gives some ray of hope. Seeing you post these ideas here on the Fediverse gives even more hope. A world where billionaires no longer control the media. Yes, it seems dangerous and reckless to let unfettered misinformation fill the void. But there is also room for community and solidarity and wisdom to flourish.

Which brings me back to the idea of "when will they do something about inequality". And I wonder who "they" actually are. Because really, "they" is us. We are the only ones who will do something about it. And I want to do more than just listen to a bloke from England. How do I change the system so we really do get a better govt???

@ewen @phocks Start writing letters to your MP and organising others to do the same to their MPs (especially if they’re in govt) if they’re all hearing the same thing then it will start to get traction. Estate tax, wealth tax, UBI and dental in Medicare would be amazing.

@ewen @phocks To do this effectively it does need some organising group to help people know who to write to and what to write for maximum effect. So, do we start a movement like Amnesty but for equity in Australia?

Sorry to be a downer here, but I have little faith in the democratic system while the media is so wonky. Govts so rarely give two shits about their constituents. They care more about their donors.

The veneer of democracy is very very thin.

Sorry to be a downer here, but I have little faith in the democratic system while the media is so wonky. Govts so rarely give two shits about their constituents. They care more about their donors.

The veneer of democracy is very very thin.

@ewen @phocks Fair, but you’ve got to start somewhere and if you were given hope by Josh’s post, there are a lot of people also wanting that hope.

Hope yes. For me, hope is to change the system. I have been saying this my whole life. You can't put good people into a bad system and expect things to go well.

I want to change the system. That is my hope.
