Why is Mastodon the best social medium in 2026?
Picture 1: If I share a post with some objectively good news, it gets 97 boosts and 140 likes.
Picture 2: If I share the same post on Threads, it gets zero interactions — zero! — because it contains a link to the competing social medium YouTube, and on Threads, Mark Zuckerberg has decided that the algorithm should not promote such content.
Threads is where the rich decide what we can talk about.
On Mastodon, we decide.
Hmmmm…. I suppose you expect me to boost this??

@gsymon or you can call Mark Zuckerberg and ask if that is allowed.

Not sure who that is. Do you mean Mark Fuckerberg?

@winkelmesser It does now.

Spot on and this is the pain point.
Social media should be about social interaction between individuals and organisations sharing information. Not biased big tech algorithms pushing us in directions for profit or gain otherwise...

@xs4me2 I think we need a different term for what Threads is.
Mastodon is clearly a social medium, but Threads is…
I would say an antisocial medium.

@randahl We don't hate commercial social networks enough. I don't want to be a consumer but I want to be a creator of something, and I want to be able to share the links to my channels for people to see. What's the point for a company to use a social network? Only to buy ads and blue checks? To engage in rage? And beside that, these platforms are inflated with bots.

@randahl I'm quite new to using this platform. Any tips to help initiate curate an algorithm and people to follow?

Looking for #hashtags helps, follow hashtags and usw them. Ask @FediTips or #fedihelp, follow many many accounts, be activ. I wish you a good time in #fediverse!

@randahl@mastodon.social I'm not sure if I saw the original. This seems somewhat baffling to me, but I've seen (from my own perspective) similar stuff. I think I posted the same video on YouTube (the place people are saying you go, because that's where the audience is) and on PeerTube... Well, it could have been "how things are counted" but it was easily twice as active on PeerTube.

@randahl Picture 3: if you roast another billionaire-owned 'social network' you get double the boosts and stars on Mastodon!

@depressivehacks @randahl you are the algorithm. It's up to you to curate your timeline. And it's a good thing
