Why is Mastodon the best social medium in 2026?

Picture 1: If I share a post with some objectively good news, it gets 97 boosts and 140 likes.

Picture 2: If I share the same post on Threads, it gets zero interactions — zero! — because it contains a link to the competing social medium YouTube, and on Threads, Mark Zuckerberg has decided that the algorithm should not promote such content.

Threads is where the rich decide what we can talk about.

      On Mastodon, we decide.

      @randahl

Spot on and this is the pain point.

Social media should be about social interaction between individuals and organisations sharing information. Not biased big tech algorithms pushing us in directions for profit or gain otherwise...

@xs4me2 I think we need a different term for what Threads is.

Mastodon is clearly a social medium, but Threads is…

I would say an antisocial medium.

@randahl which essentially means: @leavex is far from enough.

It is just the first finger leaving the ice cold water while being on your way to an enjoyable whirlpool.

@randahl We don't hate commercial social networks enough. I don't want to be a consumer but I want to be a creator of something, and I want to be able to share the links to my channels for people to see. What's the point for a company to use a social network? Only to buy ads and blue checks? To engage in rage? And beside that, these platforms are inflated with bots.

@randahl@mastodon.social I'm not sure if I saw the original. This seems somewhat baffling to me, but I've seen (from my own perspective) similar stuff. I think I posted the same video on YouTube (the place people are saying you go, because that's where the audience is) and on PeerTube... Well, it could have been "how things are counted" but it was easily twice as active on PeerTube.

Not sure who that is. Do you mean Mark Fuckerberg?

@gsymon @randahl I only know a Mark Lizardborg: half robot, half lizard, part AI; don’t expect to get an accurate answer from the latter.

@randahl In a meaningful sense, the Likes of X are ex-social media apps. They are ad-selling, opinion-steering vehicles for the powerful.

                                        Mastodon has been refreshingly social.

                                          Nicely put! A clear eyeopener.
