@MaryAustinBooks Scarecrows and other similar things have to be moved every two or three days, farmers and gamekeepers used to know this.

@MaryAustinBooks I like how the fake coyote sign is outside the fake coyote's field of vision, so as not to exacerbate the fake coyote's crippling impostor syndrome.

@MaryAustinBooks The geese would have been frightened away if the sign had said REAL COYOTE. Duh.

@MaryAustinBooks @briankrebs At Bell Labs Holmdel, they decided to use some artificial ponds as part of the heat exchange system for the air conditioners. The geese found those heated ponds lovely, but their droppings clogged the intake filters. Management responded by deploying fake swans. Guess how well that worked?

Once lived in an apartment complex with a big pond with a fountain spray thing. Ducks loved it, but some of the residents got the idea the ducks were a health hazard. After multiple community meetings and at least two complex wide votes it was decided to remove the ducks. A firm was hired, the ducks were trapped and taken fifty miles away across the coastal mountain range and released...

You guessed it. The ducks were back before nightfall. πŸ¦†

@mastodonmigration @MaryAustinBooks @briankrebs That reminds me of the story about Penzias and Wilson and their discovery of the 3Β°K microwave background radiation of the universe. Trying to eliminate all noise sources, they discovered that the inside of the antenna had become home to some pigeons, who had decorated it with their droppings. They removed the pigeons and drove them far awayβ€”but of course, pigeons are *homing pigeons* and promptly returned to the antenna (https://www.lindau-nobel.org/pigeon-waste-cosmic-melodies-and-noise-in-scientific-communication/).

@SteveBellovin @MaryAustinBooks @briankrebs Reminding me of the cooling ponds at Fermilab in the days when it was operational ... home to a huge winter population of geese and ducks who would go scour the Illinois cornfields for a meal and then come back to party in the warm pool. Not aware that they ever tried to get them to leave. Of course they also had (maybe still have) Bison which was pretty cool.
