Just considering its an opensource project and judging from the reactions on the PR people didn't welcome the change; this is quite the wild phrasing in the end of the article:

I mean maybe people just didn't even want to have the 'option', without any theories?
I like the approach e.g.: https://agelesslinux.org/ is taking in that regard.
