@fabio @wojtek it does include translation, which people consider to be AI https://mastodon.social/@firefoxwebdevs/115849251057488746. It even sends the text off-device to be translated, whereas Firefox does it on-device for privacy.
@jaffathecake @fabio true that… and "2,977 people" voted…

Should the gaslighting be opt-out?
lol'd at this

For the full details, see the Firefox blog https://blog.mozilla.org/en/firefox/ai-controls/
@firefoxwebdevs@mastodon.social Thanks for implementing! I'm just wondering why the main switch uses a switch widget and the others use a dropdown, is there more functionality planned?

Stop portraying Mastodon users as the "anti-AI crazies".
Instead, ask yourself: "What is the relation between Mastodon users & Firefox?"
The answer:
An overwhelming number of Mastodon users used to be your champions.
They are tech people who used to recommend Firefox to the normies in their life. A crowd of mini-influencers, recommending your product.
And I don't understand why you go out of your way to alienate exactly these people.

"
We used to be your champions, your ambassadors. We would've gladly died up on that hill. But now that you've had your fill in publicity and fame. We all turn in shame.You in your grandeur thought that it was us who were the keys to power. And not the keys to stay in the eyes of our.
You've become like the rest of them. No care for what affected them.But don't worry we'll rid the pest off them. Just like we've done on your behalf. Let this message be your epitaph.

@froztbyte @reflex @ddelemeny @jaffathecake I handle it with common sense really. I don't trust the output 100 percent for anything critical, but many of the newer models (like Google's Gemini3) have gotten so good that it's really not as much of an issue as it used to be. Also understanding how these LLMs are trained and what specific situations they were designed to be used in helps a lot. It will probably never be perfect, but frankly no technology is.
@ZBennoui @froztbyte @reflex @ddelemeny thanks for weighing in! That's very similar to my use of translation, fwiw
-
@fabio oh! what a great detective work! maybe you should dig some more to find more discrepancies? /s
I have account on vivaldi.net because I was an avid fan Opera (before they switched to chrome and then sell off to china) and when original crew started Vivaldi I got excited but it turned out it's not that great but I still got the account. I didn't use fedi all that much (tbh I started using it more only a couple of months back) but I already had an account on vivaldi so I stuck with that because "it just works".
Now, how on earth one could draw conclussion on personal perspective based only on an account domain is beyond me xDDDDD
I guess this can come only from "brave fighters" that see world black and white so in my case I should eradicate Vivaldi and this account from my computer because I wasn't completely "anti-AI"? xDDD@wojtek bad attempt of being a contrarian it is.

@jaffathecake @ZBennoui @froztbyte @reflex @ddelemeny will there be an option in the translation tool to substitute it with a 3rd party extension?

@jaffathecake @ZBennoui @froztbyte @reflex @ddelemeny will there be an option in the translation tool to substitute it with a 3rd party extension?
@fasterandworse @ZBennoui @froztbyte @reflex @ddelemeny the option isn't within the translate tool, but translation can indeed be provided by add-ons, e.g. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/simple-translate/

@jaffathecake @ZBennoui @froztbyte @reflex @ddelemeny but will they be promoted as alternative options directly in the context of the built-in translation tool?
-
@reflex @ddelemeny @jaffathecake @froztbyte they want to keep framing this as a deliberation over the merits of individual features instead of a, pretty straight forward, push for a separation of concerns between a web browser and extensions
@reflex @ddelemeny @jaffathecake @froztbyte @fasterandworse not to mention the increased risk of vulnerabilities. I would say that I have not updated my Firefox to avoid these updates and I do find the Mastodon is anti-AI is, being generous, the wrong interpretation of the poll.
-
@davidgerard @jaffathecake @duke_of_germany @firefoxwebdevs Oh, I see: "Developer relations lead" at Mozilla (and previously "developer advocate" at Google). No wonder he's putting "developer of sorts" in all his profiles/blurbs/blogs.
@barubary @davidgerard @jaffathecake @duke_of_germany @firefoxwebdevs That’s silly, all the sorts are in textbooks already, we don’t need more
(Sorry)

@reflex @ddelemeny @jaffathecake @froztbyte @fasterandworse after my Firefox stops working, I'll switch to something else. Most probably librewolf

@dadadan @ddelemeny @jaffathecake @froztbyte @fasterandworse Zen and Waterfox have committed to keeping AI out of the default experience. I'm hoping they add Servo as an alternative renderer once they are ready to start taking on bugs, ideally done in a way where we can switch between engines until Servo can fully take over.
-
@wariat @fabio @firefoxwebdevs
Yes! I know! Firefox, with each update should present a new-tab-page forcing users selecting all new additions. You know - some may not want new JS api! Or CSS adding animations! /s
@wojtek
Nope, it's not the same. -
@jaffathecake @ZBennoui @froztbyte @reflex @ddelemeny but will they be promoted as alternative options directly in the context of the built-in translation tool?
@fasterandworse @ZBennoui @froztbyte @reflex @ddelemeny I'm not aware of any plan for that. I guess it's similar to the bookmark system not promoting other bookmarking solutions.

@duke_of_germany
just to confirm: i've used Firefox almost since it was released, and been the person who pushes it on people i know.i've stopped using it, 100% caused by the odd priorities at Mozilla, with AI as the final drop.
not saying this in order to convince them to change direction. i'm gone and i no longer care. it's just a factual contribution to the discussion.
@bjoernstaerk @duke_of_germany @jonny @jaffathecake @firefoxwebdevs @davidgerard Yep - exactly the same with me. There are lots of browser choices and I've chosen that Firefox is no longer one of them.
For me, it was the change in policy for being not able to say "we don't sell your data" and not Ai - but the Ai stance doesn't make me want to come back.
Saying that the “Mastodon users don't like Ai" is a pretty sweeping generalization and it's easy to interpret as negative.
-
@fennix to be clear, I'm not playing this off as a mastodon thing. I mean… if my intent was to ignore people here, I've done a pretty bad job of that given I've engaged with people most of today.
My point was that if you run a poll about AI preference on Mastodon, it's pretty obvious what the outcome will be. That doesn't mean it isn't valid, it just means that putting effort into discovering what's already discovered is a misuse of time.
@jaffathecake @fennix fyi you can ignore people while ostensibly engaging them. this is easy to do if you deliberately do not address the actual points people are making and instead focus on semantics.
-

@jaffathecake @ZBennoui @froztbyte @reflex @ddelemeny unfortunately the addons library has a bunch of plugins to improve the firefox bookmarking system but not so many to replace it

@jaffathecake @ZBennoui @reflex @ddelemeny that reply is another example of Doing It Again, fwiw.
@jaffathecake @ZBennoui @reflex @ddelemeny I’ve given this a couple of hours (and I’m willing to give it a day or two)
But I want to point out to you, @jaffathecake, that your silence and non-engagement here is not going to be read favourably. By anyone.
And they can see you’ve engaged elsewhere.
