    I’ve seen so many BS excuses about H-1B fraud from leftists that’s just thinly veiled racism and xenophobia and nationalistic economic protectionism

    Those people make frothing at the mouth republicans seem more friendly. At least they’re not pretending to be your friend

      @skinnylatte we need all the immigrants. It is not very many years into deglobalization and bad demographics when every talent is needed. Being from California, I grew up with all the thought, work and problem solving from every angle. We need all the cultures, all the ideas, it is beautiful. The "took my job" BS is just racist great replacement theory $#!+ for poors, if I am speaking plainly. California is expensive, yes. But the reason why ain't just the weather.

        @skinnylatte

        H1B fraud looks like employers underpaying workers & locking them into lower pay by not allowing them to accept a better position elsewhere.

          @FranceskaMann that describes almost every immigration program for almost every country. Including the ‘good ones’. Severe restrictions and fewer rights than citizens

          H-1B isn’t perfect but it’s also not the low wage mill described in the popular imagination

            @skinnylatte @FranceskaMann

            Canada is very frank about viewing non citizens as cash machines. If you generate enough value you get to stay another year. And it better be full time with an entity that pays employment tax.

            I hear that if you're francophone (pale variety) "strong ties to French culture" is actually taken into consideration by their immigration.

              @skinnylatte I'm mostly grumpy that it seems to not be a very fast path to citizenship.

              like, it sucks to have so much of the city be full of people who aren't allowed to vote.

                    @skinnylatte specially I know a chinese trans woman who was severely impacted by this bullshit and was unable to find a job due to the current political climate in US

                    and what it means for a trans woman if she have to go back to China is very obvious

                    yet westerners are still keep telling me about how people like her should just go back to China because she'd be "exploited" and have "less rights" in US

                      @skinnylatte In my experience most "Enlightened" white westerners tend to be anti-immigrant at some level but always find good reasons for their bigotry and ignorance. It's tiring.

                        @skinnylatte As an H1-B worker I proved the viability of a project that was at risk of being cancelled, leading to the immediate hiring of forty local engineers - and many more over the years.

                        The company was struggling to break even. The project gave them a five dollar per unit profit boost, for around a hundred million units per year.

                        I know I'm not unique in bringing specialized skills at critical times, I knew many at this company, all working closely with American engineers who have the system-wide knowledge essential to create finished products.

                        Governments can choose to view immigration as a tool for US productivity, or close it down in an act of performative isolationism. I guess the country gets what they vote for.

                              @DeanFarrell they think we should reduce international immigration because H1Bs empower billionaires to fuck over Americans.

                              Which is true, but their solution also involves fucking over immigrants.

                                @skinnylatte If workers from India are more qualified to do the job than Americans are, it's the result of the GOP's 50-year war on education.

                                          @skinnylatte hopefully my strong “immigration is good, should be way easier, and we should do way more of it” absolves me.

                                          It’s amazing how many clear correlations exist in America’s history that we just refuse to see, not least of which is how beneficial immigration is, especially when it’s a free for all
