Yes. I'm a huge fan of creamtop ... however sometimes the places that make it are related to pasteurization doubters (raw milk crowd) and I don't like to support that even if they make pasteurized but NOT homogenized milk

@futurebird argh, yeah, pasteurization you *definitily* want!
Sorry to hear it is so niche and that the niche is dangerous.

I really love the taste of milk and it's sad but maybe it is for the best if it's a bizarre treat from now on. It was never a sensible food. I'm not fighting on that point.

As they say, when the first man discovered that goats give milk, what was he trying to do exactly ?

@futurebird Your mileage may vary, but I started experiencing lactose intolerance in my late 20s. Instead of assuming sensitization, I took the "let's see if habituation works" approach and spent a month drinking twice as much milk every day. My tolerance increased and I haven't had problems since.

I don't know about everyone else but almond milk with vanilla tastes enough like milk that I find it a good replacement. Doesn't froth very well for cappuccino in my opinion though.

@dendari @futurebird One of the oat milk brands has a variant specifically for making coffee, and it works quite well.

@futurebird Welcome to the Lactose-free club. I hope your friends and family are as accommodating as mine are when having you over for dinner.

Irrespective of vegans pushing for healthier/etc. alternatives, brands cheaping out and not using real butter has a side benefit that more snack foods are lactose free, like Ritz crackers and some pie crusts that use shortening. (Your local distributors' recipes may vary)

In university, I had a vegan friend who lived mostly on Oreos and diet soda. 😛

Me too. I am most sad about cheese. I love cheese.

I have discovered, though, that pancakes, custard and mashed potato can all be made with oat milk quite decently. I think oat milk custard actually tastes better.

You are in luck to be living right now as there are all sorts of plant based “dairy” products now. Giving up Cheese and Ice Cream about did me in emotionally / spiritually but it was that or being in constant pain.

Other than doing Milk and Pretzels I seldom if ever drank Milk in adulthood…and none of the liquid plant milks are even close to the cow juice experience…but great for cooking .

A year before I stopped dairy started drinking my coffee “straight, no creme”. It was more a taste issue as I had just “discovered” Kona Coffee and i drink “pure” coffee to this day.

As they say, they think that with an idea of humans being just as disconnected from nature as we are now. That is the sad part…

@futurebird honestly oat milk is great. I'm not intolerant but I've always found cow milk... Weird.
Good milky oat milk though? Doesn't go DISGUSTING when it's been in the fridge a week, now I'm used to it in tea, non-vegan stuff is weird. It's whatever you're used to. You can do another thing, just takes a little while to adjust.

And better for the planet bonus!

@futurebird It's been growing with me since around 30. I discovered that it turns out people with Sicilian ancestry typically get lactose intolerant as they age, which makes me sad.

Yeah I prefer almond milk (not the vanilla kind though). IMO it tastes a lot closer to regular milk than other plant-based milks (fortunately I'm not allergic to nuts).

@lienrag @futurebird i'm thinking about those old paintings that have the virgin mary squirting milk into the mouths of the faithful and i suspect that our squeamishness is a very modern thing
