A data center drained 30M gallons of water unnoticed — until residents complained about low water pressure

@J2
Plain theft. Just like Big Tech AI stole all our intellectual property to then sell it back to us? Just like bitcoin? Big Tech and the modern Internet is built on theft and criminality from the ground up. But the tech bros own the politicians, so it's not theft, it's innovation.@gerrymcgovern @J2 @paulschoe @YimbyEarth Perhaps they are just assuming the same weird and obtuse interpretation of eminent domain rights as numerous oil and gas pipeline companies in the US? (I.e what's yours is mine, if I have adopted a business model that requires me to expropriate it.)

That approach makes me think more about the modern IT/AI inustry.

I talk about my 'First Rule of unregulated capitalism'.
If you are not able to conclude from that sentence that I am not talking about regulations themselves, then I am sorry.
Maybe my English is too limited to explain that I am not talking about regulations datacenters are subjected to.
Enjoy the day.
Please feel free to let me know if you ever come up with any actual defense for your claims.

@paulschoe I guess there's a long history; letters patent, enclosure acts, colonialism, etc. Essentially any human activity involving exploitation of a power imbalance. In this case, the victims include other corporate entities. Something, something, class-struggle, etc.

@solownh That's it. And that's why the data centers try to target the poor areas and the rural communities, where they think they can get away with anything.
The more you look at this Western-made, high-tech society, the more disgusting and depraved it becomes. But if you stay on the surface, all you see are these shiny, addictive conveniences.
@gerrymcgovern @solownh I predict a high rate of sabotage in the next few years. I say bring it on!
We can no longer simply just let "law and order" step in to fix this, because the whole goddamn system is corrupt now.
I am not a parent. If I was, you think I'm going to be okay with allowing these thieves to steal all natural resources?
And to think, I am pretty radical for a 56 year old, but there are people far more radical than I. The next few years are going to be very violent.

A data center drained 30M gallons of water unnoticed — until residents complained about low water pressure
Residents in Fayetteville, Georgia, noticed low water pressure last year. The utility discovered two unaccounted-for water connections at one of the nation’s largest data center campuses.
“We get this notification from Fayette County water system saying you need to stop watering your lawns to help conserve water."
The future billionaires envision is a deserted Earth with cooled data centers, and people dying of thirst. A mix of Terminator and Mad Max.

@gerrymcgovern
thirty million gallons. sounds like a lot. is that 1 swimming pool, 10 swimming pools, 100 swimming pools, 100000000000 swimming pools?
#metric@OneInterestingFact @gerrymcgovern it depends on the size of the swimming pool. My parents had a smallish residential pool installed in our backyard when I was growing up. It took about 30,000 gallons to fill from empty.

@gerrymcgovern I wonder what would happen to residential customers if they installed multiple, unbilled connections to the utility system
