I see a lot of posts lately along the lines of, "Well, if the tech companies/data centers are going to waste so much electricity and water, why should I bother to conserve?"

Some people get mad when I post sentiments like this because they claim I'm letting Big Oil/Big Tech off the hook and shifting responsibility to the individual.
That is also wrong. We are each responsible for our own choices and actions. The fact that someone else is doing something wrong doesn't absolve you from your own responsibility to try and do good.

@MLE_online To me the missing link between these ideas is “if I’m doing what I reasonably can* to conserve, I get even more fired up to compel these [redacted] corporations by regulation, law, and aggressive enforcements and penalties to do it too.” It’s not only not either-or, they *amplify* each other.
* (Probably well more than what most people would consider reasonable, but when you have circumstantial privilege to not need more, why wouldn’t you leverage it? So I do.)

That thinking misses the point. You conserve because it's the right thing to do, not because everyone else is doing it.
If you see someone being repeatedly stabbed, you don't say, "I'm going to go stab them, too, but it's ok, because I'm just going to do it once."
@MLE_online You may be right, but shaming people into conservation is a losing strategy when the only winning strategy is who we vote for.
No amount of personal conservation is going to get us out of the mess we are making. That only resides in the domain of government and frankly any other discussions aren't helpful. They were 30 years ago, but not anymore, at least outside of learning how to be a generally well rounded, good person as you grow up. -

People blame the oil companies, but who are they selling the oil to?
They sell it to us to power our cars and make our plastic goods. Those aren't things we can easily detach ourselves from, but if everyone made the choice to drive less and buy less disposable junk, the oil companies would process less oil. It's not like they burn it just to burn it.

@MLE_online there is also the 'why am I suffering so you can take a 3 hour shower' angle. Which I also agree with, but I think the pig should be the one on a diet. Resource starvation makes lots of anger.
