That thinking misses the point. You conserve because it's the right thing to do, not because everyone else is doing it.

If you see someone being repeatedly stabbed, you don't say, "I'm going to go stab them, too, but it's ok, because I'm just going to do it once."

Which I also agree with, but I think the pig should be the one on a diet. Resource starvation makes lots of anger.

People blame the oil companies, but who are they selling the oil to?

They sell it to us to power our cars and make our plastic goods. Those aren't things we can easily detach ourselves from, but if everyone made the choice to drive less and buy less disposable junk, the oil companies would process less oil. It's not like they burn it just to burn it.

No amount of personal conservation is going to get us out of the mess we are making. That only resides in the domain of government and frankly any other discussions aren't helpful. They were 30 years ago, but not anymore, at least outside of learning how to be a generally well rounded, good person as you grow up.

* (Probably well more than what most people would consider reasonable, but when you have circumstantial privilege to not need more, why wouldn’t you leverage it? So I do.)

If everyone just gives into bad behavior, then there's no incentive to change regulations

Ethical people do things because they are the right thing to do.

But it's important to point out that you sometime really need systematic change to really move the needle. I drive a civic among the crowds of SUVs because it's the right thing to do IMHO. But we need to change regulations if we want to bring an end to the era of American Hugemobiles.

That is also wrong. We are each responsible for our own choices and actions. The fact that someone else is doing something wrong doesn't absolve you from your own responsibility to try and do good.
