@tansy @tinker we are going to do a sewing machine demo at @RepairCafeFFX (next month)?
Great idea to add Linux installs, if people at the cafe's can support them!
@artcollisions @tansy @RepairCafeFFX - I wrote up a quick thread with lessons learned about our first install party a couple months ago: https://infosec.exchange/@tinker/115517060878052214

@tinker Amazing! I have never heard of a “repair cafe” before, but I will see if anything like that exists locally.
Nice work!
@SeasonsChange - Cheers! Its basically folks bringing stuff in to get repaired by neighbors who know how to repair a thing. Once a thing is dropped off, the folks who brought them in to be fixed go to a booth they think they can help out with while they wait for their own thing to be repaired.
Its neighbors taking care of neighbors and maintaining equipment.

@tinker Sweet! We've had one in Takoma Park a few times now. Going there for my busted pressure cooker, I found that I know a little more than enough about electronics to be dangerous but probably just shy of enough to help people with them for most cases.
I suspect that would be me across most fields save for programming. Jack of all trades...
@elight - Heck, if you can, go team up with folks who know more about electronics than you and learn from them. Then lend your shoulder for what you are able to do (I imagine you know quite a bit, enough to do some good work!). Most repair booths have more than one person and they all work together to fix things, teaching and sorting through issues together.
And yeah, I am a jack of all trades as well - I think its wonderful!

@tinker Nice! Thanks. That would be for one of our more IT folk. I'm the sewing gal

@fathermucker - Cheers. I can't do much, but I can do what I can as I can.

@tansy @RepairCafeFFX@artcollisions @tansy @RepairCafeFFX - Ohhh... you do actual good things - not made up things living in a land of fake 1s and 0s, hahaha!
You're awesome! Thank you for doing that!

@tinker thank you! Those little 1s and 0s are slippery beasts. I cannot keep track of them! I'm much better with things I can hold in my hands.

@artcollisions - I feel that. To your points, I need to use my hands. I have a love affair for purely mechanical systems (bicycles, spring loaded music boxes, etc). In a past life, I would have loved to have been a watch maker / repairer.
I just love to tinker.
The slippery 1s and 0s are goofy though.. i like hacking them... they're so slippery you can make them slide however you like.
It's all made up. None of it's real. Real consequences, sure, but they're just figments of everyone's collective imaginations.
Anyhoo. Sewing is where it's at. I stand in awe.
Oh! We had a couple sewers... seamsters..stresses... I don't know words. But we had folks who could handle fabric at our cafe today! So cool.

@tinker Oh, I get it! I wish I could make my brain interested in coding, but meh. I did buy myself an embroidery module with a new machine a couple years ago and this year, I pinky promise, is the year I'm going to design my own embroidery for something.
I think all creative pursuits are worthwhile! Even the slippery ones

@artcollisions @tansy @tinker Next month we're having a "common-sense cybersecurity + Windows 10 end of support" workshop, which will include an intro to Linux! I'd like to do more with Linux in the future, it's always been on our radar, but yeah, March is the tech workshop, we will probably do the sewing machine one April or later.

@RepairCafeFFX Oooh, I thought sewing machine demo was in March. I think I have a conflict in April

At my library's repair cafe as a volunteer.
It's the first time they're running it and they're hoping to do this regularly.
I came in thinking I would help with computer troubleshooting... but they have enough people doing that.
So I figured I could help with Linux OS install... but the local Linux Install Party is here and has enough people.
Then a guy brought in a bicycle! And no one is here doing bike repair. But I brought my allen wrench set and a multitool.
So I just got done running and installing a new bicycle brake line on an older bike. Brake works just fine now!
I'll bring my full set of bike tools next time!

@tinker I do this here in Auckland, it feels like a typical session is 45% vacuum cleaners, 45% toasters and 10% anything else, although in reality it is 33, 33, 33. Lately there have been a lot more rice cookers.

@tinker Also, I still don't really know how to sew clothing. I am in awe of people who can make nice clothing.

@artcollisions - Same. I have a good friend who sews and knits (does both, specifically) and takes patterns and makes whole outfits, dresses, tops, etc. Knits socks, and blankets. Made me a knit cap for winter and a set of combination gloves/mittens as well. Just blows my mind.

@tinker very nice! I bought a bunch of really beautiful fabric to turn into clothing last year and will get to it eventually. I'm committed to bags at the moment. lol.

@tinker Can I please register as a Linux Install Party voter? I have never actually installed Linux (well it’s been a few years) but I am sure I could learn!
