@miked@social.tchncs.de yes. no. maybe. maybe not. why? why not?
i never understand how peeps expect complete strangers to make up their mind for them.
one very obvious strategy is to make yourself an โ
โ VM, then muck about with it for a month, to ascertain if it floats your boat or not.
only you know what factors are important to you, in any putative distro.

@miked My opinion is that Fedora is a good OS if you mainly want a stable platform for getting things done, while Arch may be a better choice if youโre interested in tinkering with your OS for the sake of tinkering. Both are good operating systems, and the Arch wiki is legendary even among people not running Arch, but in my experience Fedora just keeps working year after year while Arch canโt be trusted to not break occasionally, and reading change logs for your installed packages - at the very least after the fact - is more or less necessary to keep downtime to a minimum.

@miked Depends on your expectations in Arch

#dropbearpooterising #linuxwomen@MsDropbear42 I appreciate your answer and the VM tip!
I'm not expecting anyone to make up my mind for me. Just trying to learn about other people's experiences and engage in discourse. Maybe make some like-minded internet friends?

@mikael your opinion is greatly appreciated! Thank you very much! Those were my fears as well about running Arch

@fabiscafe Fair enough. Going in blind tbh XD I want things to work, obviously, but I also love tinkering.

@miked@social.tchncs.de ok, but i could not read your mind, only read your written words.
fwiw, imo, โ
โ is great, but so are many other distros, it all depends on one's hands-on or hands-off preference. my tower runs two instances of arch kde plasma [different installation modes], one of kdelinux, with thoughts of adding SparkyLinux Testing kde plasma in coming weeks. my lappy now runs said Sparky. on both pooters til recently i ran โ
โ kinoite, but i recently made a values decision to abandon fedora coz 1. merkan, & 2. they seem to be letting gen-ai in, to both of which things i vehemently morally object. other peeps ofc will make very different choices. good luck.

2 follow-up questions: what's merkan and how/where are they letting gen-ai in Fedora?

1. merkan = american, ie usa

2. in multiple fediverse posts, over recent weeks, there were many links & references to some official fedora blog articles where some senior person there was explaining their new policy on ai. various popular tech sites then also began reporting on it. some links a quick search dug up now fyi:

whilst afaict the current status is in flux, the fact they have not unambiguously banned it, makes me apprehensive about them eventually accepting it. this uncertainty, combined with my moral decision to not use any usa product or service as much as i can help it, prompted my decision to change. -
