@bigclimate.bsky.social In fact, Jimmy Carter brought Selective Service (Draft) Registration back in 1979 though an actual draft (or conscription) hasn't been invoked since Vietnam. What's changed is that Hegseth wants to make it automatic rather than just an obligation which it seems many ignore.
There's a lot of confusion in the press over this, I find. The draft, or conscription, refers to being called up for military service. No one is suggesting that, yet - it's just Selective service Registration that's being automated (maybe).
