1 There has been a pair of these hawks (I think it's just a pair, but could be wrong, not sure how large their territories are) around for the last number of years, once or twice nesting right on the acreage in the woods just behind the house.

We thought they might be choosing the acreage again this year (vs further out onto the farm in the contiguous woods), but today I saw them some distance out.

2 At first, just hearing them, I thought it was woodpeckers, but they were sounding not quite right + they were staying high up in the trees (Pileated Woodpeckers spend a lot of time on the lower parts of trees) + I caught a glimpse of undersides as they flew + was seeing some reddish brown, not right for Pileated Woodpeckers. This view of the area where I saw them shows you how easy it is to *not* see birds you know very well are there..lol
