Canadian small business owners, do you use accounting software that is Canadian made?
-
@britt Canadian made you’re likely looking at Wave
The issue is when you grow enough is that accountants / bookkeepers only accept to work with certain tools. Which locks you in with shitty tools (aka QBO)
-
@jerome @britt I’m glad you asked this. Wave just started charging for features that used to be free (primarily bank transaction auto-import), so it’s been on my list to look for alternatives. (Funny how Wave, originally the alternative to QBO, now calls for its own alternative! 🤪)
Sometimes I find good tools through @openalternative
Here are some that might be in the ballpark (though I can’t speak to where they are made):
Akaunting: Open Source Alternative to Quickbooks, Xero and Bench
Self-hostable accounting software covering invoicing, expense tracking, cash flow, and client portals. Free to use, available in 50+ languages.
OpenAlternative (openalternative.co)
Frappe Books: Open Source Alternative to Quickbooks, YNAB and Mint
A user-friendly desktop accounting software that helps businesses manage invoices, track expenses, and handle bookkeeping with a modern interface.
OpenAlternative (openalternative.co)
I’ll let you know if I find others!

Didnt know Wave had started charging but honestly I prefer that. It’s normal for a business to pay an accounting tool and i remember few years ago when I was using Wave i felt afraid of the long term viability of a company that wasn’t charging anything. Either they sell my data or they go bankrupt.
Id rather have them charge a fair price!

@scott yikes! I have read their CS is lacking, too… so I’ll likely try another option.

@britt FWIW, I have narrowed my search and am testing two options:
Frappe Books — Free, runs locally, no cloud (from what I can tell). Also no paid option, so I am not sure how/why they are producing it. Maybe they have plans for freemium/paid plans in the future https://frappe.io/books
Manager — Free, runs locally. Paid option to use their cloud, if you need multiple users, etc. https://www.manager.io

@scott Heyya! I actually think I’m going to give Xero a go for a bit… it seems to have the best price for what I personally need, overall. It’ll really help offload a lot of the cognitive work and that matters the most to me.
