    Latin nerds, I need you!
Offering Elvish nerdery in return 👇

Trying to translate "keep it secret – keep it safe" to #Latin, which I know is tricksy. Looking at verbs like servare and conservare, and adjectives for "safe" like tutus/salvus/securus...??

If you can help, I will write your phrase of choice in Tengwar (Elvish script)! Here's a sample of one way I write it – though I'll do straight lines 😅
I'll write them on a livestream and link image files for you.

Honestly surprised that I can't find a full translation of LotR to Latin! There's one of The Hobbit: https://www.harpercollins.com/products/hobbitus-ille-the-latin-hobbit-j-r-r-tolkien

And a few seemingly abandoned projects: https://web.archive.org/web/20150123220432/https://www.eldalie.ch/~earendilyon/

Plus a couple of short clips: https://youtu.be/2FQWhPfhRwU

    ...but yeah, nope :0

@alexglow securus is more like securely, but I've seen tutus(tutum) used like that before, I think that's a good bet!

This rainstorm has, as usual, gotten me excited to dig into the fancy writin' stuff – so please feel free to request words/phrases even if you don't know Latin. 🙂

I've been writing notes/journals in Elvish *letters since I was a teenager, so am doing a little refresher to write more standardized script. For contrast, here's some of my usual chicken scratch.

I think it's cooler with the tehtar (diacritics), like above, but my writing is more legible with separate vowels, so I stick to that...

@alexglow Best I could come up with is "Abscondĕ hoc, prōtĕgĕ hoc" which translates to "Hide this, protect this." I'm 75% sure there's a more elegant way to phrase this, but it's been a minute since I've done any Latin translation.

            Hope this helps!

@alexglow An elvish translation of my favorite quote would be awesome! It's by Pink Floyd: "It doesn't have to be like this. All we need to do is keep talking".

                    @alexglow

I'd love to have "A little learning is a dangerous thing".

I started my PhD thesis with the first two lines of this poem...

                    https://www.poetsgraves.co.uk/Classic%20Poems/Pope/a_little_learning.htm

And it's so very apt for many, many discussions!

@jeroen94704 Ooohh, a challenge in return!! To clarify, I mostly write the script – I know only a little Quenya/Sindarin, from very long ago, but am happy to dig into this a bit. Excellent quotation from an amazing band: worth it. 🙂
