@michelleful this was both fun and slightly embarrassing for me, as i took a semester of german in college and seem to have forgotten almost all of it

A philologist is to a linguist as an engineer is to a physicist. The first ones learn how to do things; the second ones learn the theory behind them.You wouldn't want to hire a linguist to translate a medieval text, any more than you'd hire a physicist to test the max structural load for a bridge.#linguistics #philology

@Dianora After 13 years there, I probably switch in and out of it without even knowing. They're all becoming less distinct though, thanks to the global reach of the net.
