    @IveyJanette
I remember listening to a story about Bonaly on NPR. Her manager made up some BS story of Bonaly being rescued from Africa.
The messed up part was the person the reporter got to advocate for Bonaly. Tonya Harding saw Bonaly do a back flip in the rink. Harding thought Bonaly was the best skater she ever saw because of that.
Bonaly was amazing but the only person that took up for her was Tonya Harding.

        > Olympic officials reprimanded Bonaly during the 1992 Winter Olympics for doing the backflip while she practiced. They accused her of using the backflip as a way to intimidate her opponents

        What the actual fsck!

Thank you for sharing this, I had no clue.

@rysiek Skating has always been racist.

Until the 60's,Blacks weren't allowed in rinks except as the cleaning crew.

          That racism continues today.

@IveyJanette I said the same thing when I saw it on TV.

“Surya Bonaly performed that SAME FREAKING MOVE TWENTY-EIGHT YEARS AGO.”

She didn’t receive accolades. She was banned from the sport. For Heaven’s sake.

You just cannot make this stuff up!

@sarae Once again,Black pioneers get ignored.

I'm boycotting the Olympics this year because of the overt racism. Especially on NBC.

@geonz Because they only view us as roller skaters.

Or as the cleanup crew at the rink.

                      Just like 1960.

@IveyJanette I Was watching the Olympics that year and saw it go down with my own eyes. What a travesty. The documentary somebody did on her career was phenomenal, triumphant, yet sad. Because … you know … racism.

@clayrivers They don't think we can skate, swim or ski. Even in 2026.

We were banned from rinks, pools and beaches back in the day. I know all the stories thanks to my mom and grandma.

Surya Bonaly and Tai Babilonia should have been hailed as pioneers on the rink. Instead, they were pushed aside.

I refuse to watch this year's Olympics because of that racist legacy.
