    ‘Don’t go to the US – not with Trump in charge’: the UK tourist with a valid visa detained by ICE for six weeks

    Karen Newton was in America on the trip of a lifetime when she was shackled, transported and held for weeks on end. With tourism to the US under increasing strain, she says, ‘If it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone’

    @GossiTheDog

    The USA have always been the Land of the Shackled. An oligarchy where the rich owned people one way or another (and raped minors they considered their property). And the shackle should be their official symbol, not an eagle.

      @GossiTheDog So what did Karen do wrong? Being married to her husband who's VISA expired so they wanted to enter Canada?

        @slyborg You've added some details to the story there.

        It's possible to leave the US this way, but your car rental company has to do some paper work beforehand. Since this was not the case, he could not enter Canada with his car. Why would that be so? The most plausible explanation: He did want to re-enter the US.

        @publictorsten @slyborg And why had his wife Karen been arrested six weeks? Because she was his wife?

            US citizen here. Why would anyone from outside this fucked up country run by a racist, fascist, government, knowing that there is a very real possibility of this happening, come here for any reason?

              @GossiTheDog They go to the USA, with a tense immigration situation, with an expired work visa. Dumb.

              Other cases referred are someone doing domestic work to pay her holidays under a touristic visa (work without permit), other come as tourist with tattoo equipment (to work the ICE supposed, as I would have supposed too), and other overstayed their tourist visa. No wonder they have problems.

              The Schengen agreement in Europe has made people dumb?

                @realSiegfried BTW: There is no reason to treat the husband this way, too. But they do it to thousands every day.

                  @sparekonto @GossiTheDog from the viewpoint of this particular Native American, the USA has always been about white supremacy, land grabs, genocide, racial caste systems, and stepping on the necks of people deemed inferior -
                  Blacks, Asians, Hispanics, immigrant groups, natives, all of it. Under Trump it has come out of the closet as it were and become acceptable to be a racist prick. But it never went away.

                    I've traveled with rental cars across the Canadian border and it was never an issue. Now under Trump it is. It's fucking ridiculous.
