Morning is coming earlier every day.
Getting to the trail early helps us avoid the crowds.
A couple of days ago the same person who brings three large off leash German shepherds to the trail cut us off from our car. This is our third encounter and I feel like his dogs are dangerous. The most aggressive one knocked me down to try to reach Summer the first time we met.
This time I blew my whistle to alert the owner who wasn't paying attention and let him know that if his dogs didn't back down I would pepper spray them. I also said that I had taken a photo of his Minnesota license plate and if Summer or I were hurt I would see him in court. He said the dogs were reacting to my fear. I said he needs to keep them on leash because they don't obey him.
He said that we shouldn't use the trail in the afternoons. I am complying because I don't want Summer to get hurt.
So here we are at the crack of dawn.
Cold but safe.
#Summer #DogsOfMastodon@NorcalGma2 What a jerk. I'm sorry some people are like that. I don't walk Rosie (a Belgian Malinois who is often mistaken for a German Shepherd) because my husband didn't stay consistent in training her on a leash and she doesn't always listen to me - it's not worth the risk to me even with her on leash. I wish more dog owners thought more in those terms.

I am assuming these dogs are German Shepherds but I don't know my dog breeds. One is classic tanish and black coloring, one a beautiful gray and one black. They appear the same size. Very large. I immediately thought that they were probably expensive dogs. They are all aggressive but one gets very close and terrifies Summer who puts her tail and ears down and stays between my legs shaking like a leaf. These dogs are the only reason I carry a can that makes a loud noise and pepper spray on this trail. I did tell the Wildlife refuge staff and provided a copy of his license plate. -

@madgeface @NorcalGma2 I hate crappy owners of dogs and their wild sense of entitlement. I, too, carry pepper spray because some poorly socialized dogs have come after Jimmy. It shouldn’t have to be that way.

I'm glad you reported them and very glad you're well-prepared. Here's a picture of Rosie, just for reference. She was the runt of the litter and only weighs 62 lbs. She also has hip dysplasia, which we discovered when she was 6 months old, so she's on the small side and also isn't as good a jumper as the breed suggests.

#Summer #DogsOfMastodonHe needs to train his dogs so they don't react to other people and other dogs. He is responsible for his dogs' actions and reactions. That's the bottom line. If he chooses to shirk that responsibility, you and Summer are wise to avoid him.

The dogs we are dealing with look like the classic dog show like German shepherds I think. They are beautiful except they are menacing in their manner. Rosie looks similar but different and much sweeter. -

@FiddleSix
I've spent enough time trying to reason with him. I'm pretty sure he isn't an early riser so this is a good answer for us. This time of year I can't take Summer to the easiest beach access because it is snowy plover nesting time. This long walk to a vehicle access point not posted with dog restrictions allows me to let her run. I am definitely getting my exercise too. That's the other thing about these dogs is that he lets them run wild in the closer dunes that are posted leash only. He is bad news all around. -

#Summer #DogsOfMastodon@NorcalGma2 saying you shouldn't use the trail in the afternoon sounds like a threat to me. Might be time to make use of that license plate photo in the very near future.
