Edmonton! It's March! (Darn February disappearing so quick...) Who knows what the weather will bring, but there will be plenty to do indoors regardless

That includes multiple theatre festivals. No need to wait until August for weird & wonderful performance art!

March Edmonton Festivals & Events

Mar 3-8: Sound Off Festival of Deaf theatre & performing arts. At Fringe HQ, pay what you can.

Mar 5-15: SkirtsAfire Festival celebrates women & gender minorities in theatre & performing arts. Various locations, tix <$30/show.

Mar 6-7: Edmonton Craft Beer Festival at the Expo Centre. Admission starts at $32, not including any samples. Hopefully they don't cross over too much with:

Mar 6-8: Wildlife Festival at the Expo Centre has a variety of exotic animals on displays. $21, with additional tix for hands-on experiences.

Mar 6,8,13,20,27: FAVA Fest from the Film and Video Arts Society of Alberta features works by their member independent filmmakers, with collections of shorts screened on consecutive Fridays at Metro Cinema, The Orange Hub, and Capitol Theatre, plus a feature film on March 8, various workshops, then an awards show the final week.

Mar 8 (Sunday): International Women's Day

Mar 12-14: IglooFest a cross-Canada touring electronic music festival with headliners including Alison Wonderland and DeadMau5, at the Ice District Fan Park, $53 to $84 per day or $169 for the weekend (or more for VIP).

Mar 13-14: SING! Edmonton A Cappella Festival with a feature concert on Friday night, workshops & insta-choir on Satruday, and a showcase concert Saturday night. $55/weekend or individual tix.

Mar 13-15: Night of Artists Artwalk in Bonnie Doon Mall (free to browse, art for sale & musicians busking), including a gala event ($30) on Saturday evening.

Mar 17 (Tuesday): St Patrick's Day

Mar 20-28: Expanse Festival, from Theatre Azimuth at Fringe HQ, celebrates dance, clowning, and other movement-based performance art. Pay-what-you-will tickets ($35 suggested).

Mar 21 (Sat): The Art Bus will be shuttling people between the Art Gallery of Alberta and 8 smaller downtown galleries, for free, noon to 5pm.

Mar 21-22: Country Music Alberta Awards with various performances at the Edmonton Convention Centre. Tix $22+up.

Mar 24-29: Springboards: A New Play Festival hosted by Workshop West presents staged readings of, you got it, new plays. Pay-what-you-will tickets ($40 suggested). Full schedule TBA.

Apr 3-4: Downtown Defrost festival of electronic music in Churchill Square. Currently tix are priced at $81/day or $140/weekend.

Apr 8-12: Hi-Light Festival or alt/indie music at various local music venues.

Starting with the festivals...

Plays at Sound Off festival (Mar 3-8) include:

• The MaryRobin Show variety/comedy show.
• Juan Man Show a one-man show about life split both between Anglo-Canadian and Spanish language communities and hearing and Deaf communities.
• Born Between Waves a movement arts piece on cultural clashes, this time from the perspective of a Deaf Indo-Caribbean woman.
• Shadows, Spirits, Stories: A Puppet Cabaret with 3 short family-friendly pieces.
• The E-Spot a stand-up show about sex, Deafness, & disability (18+ recommended).

Shows are either in ASL or mix of spoken & ASL with ASL interpretation. At the Fringe's Backstage theatre, pay what you can.

Plays at SkirtsAfire festival (Mar 5-15) include:

• Ms Pat's Kitchen, a family-relationship drama in the context of a restaurant owned by Jamaican immigrants, at AtsHub Ortona Mar 5-8.
• I Am Eagle, a puppetry work using the metaphor of a eagle chick to discuss the "60s Scoop" experience, at Walterdale Theatre, Mar 6-7.
• Put Your Lips Together a "surreal neon-noir" piece about workplace harrassment in the context of conversations at a candlelight vigil for a murdered woman. Mar 10 & 12 at Gateway.
• Sparklers a collection of short pieces for young audiences, Mar 11 at Gateway Theatre.
• Things I Shouldn't Tell You, a stand-up show about middle aged womanhood, at Walterdale, Mar 12-15.
• EmBODYment, a collection of dance/motion pieces, at La Cité's Servus Theatre, Mar 13-14.

All shows $30 or less.
