@atpfm as a Polestar owner, that Jony Ive interior doesn’t fit the Polestar vibe any more than it does Ferrari.

@ncontino The good news is that there’s no AI at all in the follow-up or topics for next week. (The bad news is that there are a couple of AskATP questions on the topic…if we ever get to them.)

@atpfm I'm not disagreeing with anything said about AI and coding. It's unfortunate most people will end up with the wal-mart of products but I guess we're there already.

I do believe the people that care about those ‘niche' things that were discussed, like memory management, do make better programs. The combination of arts (for UI) & that technical knowledge can make better programs. It's largely because we've train people to accept tolerable software that those things aren't appreciated.

@atpfm In an ideal world there would be stronger consumer protections so large companies can't just sling out something that barely works. As someone who uses Google software at work (Google apparently hires the best), I can say their software is basic at best. We should expect better especially given how important software is now but yes, that's not the case so yes we’ll make more experienced programmers more efficient with AI. Though lets see what happens once the AI training sources dry up.

@atpfm LoveFrom, are designing the exterior of the Luce too. I don’t think the standards of today’s Ferrari design are being considered. The vibe the press, Ferrari team and media are giving suggest Ferrari classics will be the inspiration. Both Ive and Newson have openly professed their love for their 60’s Ferraris and I can envision Ferrari’s history forming the foundation of the Luce project. The interior gives a 60’s-80’s Ferrari energy seen through a Newson 1999 Ford lense.

              @atpfm
I love how much @siracusa knows about cars while not personally partaking in the hobby.

              RE: @caseyliss “having the length"...
@marcoarment says the i4 m40 is "probably faster than the Golf". Probably? PROBABLY? It's a rocket ship compared to the Golf. Our 2018 RWD LR Model 3 (250hp?) is almost certainly faster 0-60 than my former 2016 6MT Golf R. The immediate power is just insane, and even after almost 8 years, it _still_ feels fast, every time I drive it. The BMW, with 100 more HP, would just destroy both. (that said, the i4 leaves me cold, as it gets a lot of things wrong, like so many "legacy" automakers do with EVs)

John's right, the back seat on the Taycan is tragically small and hard to get into. Even the front seat is shockingly low and difficult to get into, and I own a Boxster on sport suspension. I expected the Taycan to be like any other sporty sedan but it's much more like a sports car with a token rear seat. The ingress to the rear is .. not easy. (but probably fine for kids!)

@atpfm @marcoarment I was actually pleasantly surprised at how well they designed it. Best interior for an electric car I’ve seen.

I love that they retained an analogue look and feel and kept physical buttons.

I think Jony really understood the assignment.

Having said that, 5 years development time seems extremely long….

@atpfm those coefficient of drag numbers for flush door handles must be wrong. Only source I can find is this article.

China considers banning retractable car door handles from 2027.

@atpfm Not that I'm trying to talk @caseyliss into a Porsche, but I wouldn't worry about "replacing the battery" problems on EVs. All EV batteries are warrantied until 100K, probably lasts twice as long, and Casey will get another itch by then.

@atpfm good perspective on AI development from Grady Booch, he’s been doing a few podcasts recently e.g. https://newsletter.pragmaticengineer.com/p/the-third-golden-age-of-software

@atpfm Taycan as a fun electric car with CarPlay that’s not a Tesla is pretty much the exact reason why I got a used 1st gen Taycan myself, and I am very happy with it. It’s very long, VERY WIDE, and the range is not great compared to the current generation of EVs. But I would buy it again. No regrets.

@atpfm @caseyliss Most certainly shouldn't look into the BMW neue klasse (only IX3 revealed so far I believe), they sure seem like not worth the bother 🤪

@atpfm It's very strange to hear the comments about Daikin.

They are the worlds largest AC company by sales and are considered a premium brand, with great longevity and performance. I think half the houses on my street have a ducted Daikin system installed.

@atpfm YoLink products have proven to be very helpful for tuning my HVAC (w/ claude.ai opus 4.6 assist).

@atpfm Not that I'm trying to talk @caseyliss into a Porsche, but I wouldn't worry about "replacing the battery" problems on EVs. All EV batteries are warrantied until 100K, probably lasts twice as long, and Casey will get another itch by then.

@marcoshuerta If you're referring to the part where I asked @caseyliss to consider how much "replacing the battery" would cost on a Taycan, I meant the (tiny) 12V battery, not the car's giant battery pack.

@caseyliss @siracusa @marcoshuerta If you replace the main one, I'd expect them to throw in a change of the smaller one too. $$$
