when i was 14, CD-ROM Today! magazine's cover disc came with a non-playable demo of RedShift: hardcore astronomy software that was equal parts education and reference.
even today i'm blown away at how fresh this UI is. it's got this cozy Sony-like feel - just look at those soft green LCD backgrounds for all textboxes and labels.
this could have set a standard for UI design at the time.
