In March ‘76, Abigail Adams wrote to John Adams, then at the Second Continental Congress in Philly. The delegates drafted new laws amid the push for independence, she specifically requested: “Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favourable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands.” She argued that men “would be tyrants if they could,” warning of a potential “Rebellion” if women lacked voice or representation in laws.
